ANOTHER REPUBLICAN SENATOR FAVORS SAME-SEX MARRIAGE
Illinois Republican Sen. Mark Kirk blogs in favor of same sex marriage: " Our time on this earth is limited, I know that better than most. Life comes down to who loves you, and who loves you back, and government has no place in the middle".
I generally agree.
However, government marriage requires others to legally accept and celebrate another person's version of love, which can be morally reprehensible to these people.
It's doubtful that this would happen to me, but what if "Life came down to" ( paraphrasing the Senator) one or more, women, or men, loving me back? Once traditional definitions of institutions are cast aside in our desire to self-actualize our love, there's no logical or legal justification to not sanction anyone's polyamorous or interspecies sexual relationship.
I believe it would be far healthier to eliminate government privileges through marriage, and let the people and faiths, and employers, sort out what they desire to recognize, associate with, embrace, accept, or reject. And yes, true freedom means you must be free to reject another person's concept of love. Bigotry and judgement are also part of being free. The government should be neutral on these things, especially as it is such a lousy arbiter of what is "good" and "proper".
