From Today's Washington Examiner: First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday described living in the White House as like being in a “really nice prison.”Obama’s comment came during her discussion with former First Lady Laura Bush at the African First Ladies Summit in Tanzania during an interview moderated by journalist Cokie Roberts.

Funny...I have that very same feeling, that I'm "living in a really nice prison", when considering our current situation under the constant surveillance state known as the U.S.A.

Now I'm not a fan of this administration, and it'd would be easy to take the First Lady's comment as little more than ungrateful whining, but the First Lady inadvertently makes a VERY good point about freedom and liberty. An important part of being free is having that feeling of not being monitored, watched, categorized, or "protected for your own good".

The White House, with its Praetorian Guard phalanx of worldwide security and ultra-secrecy, is little more than a sick symbol and metaphor for the country, which suffers under its soft tyranny. Sure, we can talk about these problems, but note the chilling effects which creep into everyday conversation.

A watched people act differently than a free people. Americans these days (half-jokingly) say "Watch what you say, or they take you away". Alright, perhaps you won't be taken away, literally.  But consider your increased chances of falling under IRS scrutiny, losing your job, or being pilloried in the media via strategic government "leaks".

The surveillance state has lead to citizens who say (in an unwise angry or drunken fit) "I'm going to kill you", now being convicted of "making terroristic threats", and facing 12-20 years-plus in a cage. And it has NOTHING to do with whether you had the capability of actually following through on the "threat".

So yes, First Lady Obama, we're ALL living in a type of prison. Yours has a much better view and menu.
