- NBC is reporting that Google employees staged a walkout today over the handling of sexual misconducts claims.
- The New York Times says that the walkouts started in Asia and spread across the Globe.
- According to USA Today all allegations of sexual misconduct have been denied.

“A US federal judge on Thursday halted construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, arguing that President Donald Trump’s administration had failed to adequately explain why it had lifted a ban on the project.
The ruling by Judge Brian Morris of the US District Court for the District of Montana dealt a stinging setback to Trump and the oil industry and served up a big win for conservationists and indigenous groups.
Trump granted a permit for the $8 billion conduit meant to stretch from Canada to Texas just days after taking office last year. He said it would create jobs and spur development of infrastructure.
In doing so the administration overturned a ruling by then president Barack Obama in 2015 that denied a permit for the pipeline, largely on environmental grounds, in particular the US contribution to climate change.
The analysis of a cross-border project like this is done by the State Department.”

President Trump issued a proclamation to address deficiencies in the asylum process, and we’ll talk with Matt O’Brien concerning other deficiencies which should be addressed.
Improve the Credible Fear Standard to Protect Legitimate Claims and Prevent Fraud: Congress must fix the minimal standard under current law that allows aliens – often economic migrants – to show a ‘credible fear of persecution’ and then obtain release into the interior of the country while their claim goes through backlogged immigration courts. Aliens should be required to clearly demonstrate a credible fear of persecution to stop fraud and help ensure that only legitimate claims are approved. To punish those who knowingly abuse our generosity, Congress should impose and enforce penalties for the filing of frivolous, baseless, or fraudulent asylum claims, and expand the use of expedited removal as appropriate.
- Allow for extended family detention and increase detention space: Congress can legislatively overrule the “Flores Settlement Agreement,” a court settlement and subsequent judicial rulings that limit the detention of families with children to just 20 days – a time period entirely too brief to complete a full and fair asylum adjudication. This loophole is the ‘jet engine’ driving the catch and release program. Further, Congress must fund enough detention space – including family detention centers – so no one is released while they await a court date.
- Amend the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA): This well-intended humanitarian law, which was designed to protect minors from sex traffickers, is now being exploited. Minors from across the globe are now sent to our borders by families hoping to establish an immigration anchor in the United States. The overly broad provisions of the TVPRA virtually guarantee that unaccompanied minors will be admitted to the United States, and allowed to stay, in order to complete lengthy judicial proceedings that inadvertently encourage both fraud and further exploitation of children by parties savvy enough to exploit the system.

The University Club

The Medford Commercial Club—now the Chamber of Commerce—promoted a long advertising campaign in the early 1900s that heralded the great advantages of the area’s orchard industry. It was very successful. Out-of-towners in numbers arrived in Medford, and real estate agents met the trains to hawk the orchards. The newspapers reported that newcomers were jamming the hotels and even Southern Pacific Railroad needed to set up tents on its Medford station property to bed down up to 200 potential investors.
With this boom background, wealthy Easterners and Mid-Westerners flocked to the Valley. From bringing about the city’s main water supply and Sacred Heart Hospital (later Providence Medical Hospital) to building Medford’s historic downtown, the out-of-towners strongly contributed to the area. By 1909, numerous Medford buildings were under construction or in the planning stages. Buildings with the names of Sparta, the Carnegie library, Woolworth building, and four-story Liberty building were there or under development.
The newcomers discovered, however, that their social circles were limited. Leaving the educated professionals they knew back home for the rural Valley had limitations. Some came together and in 1909 began discussing the need to form a club. In mid-October 1910, the first Rogue River Valley University Club board meeting was held. Its charter explicitly set down that its purpose was to increase social contacts and boost community development.
The average age of the 47 charter members was 30, and the list of represented universities was impressive: twelve were from Yale, eight founding members from Harvard, and six from the University of Minnesota, as a start. Stanford had four members, while the University of Oregon, Williams College, Michigan, Cornell, and Columbia had three each. All were graduates, although the charter required just that a member had attended college.
Over time, the club met in different facilities before moving into a former telephone building after World War II, adjacent to the Holly Theatre at 218 West Sixth Street in downtown Medford. The owners of the building, Alfred and Helen Carpenter, transferred ownership in 1958 to the University Club. Until the early 1990s, the club had over 200 members, but presently some 100, reflecting the changing times.
The makeup of colleges represented is still mixed, although Oregon universities are now the majority. Professionals as doctors, lawyers, and business executives make up most of the current members. An applicant for membership must have two sponsors. With no objections (including the board of trustees), the new member is welcomed in. In 2010, it was noted that Jackson County’s leading citizens had been gathering at the University Club for a century, continuing their tradition of playing cards, discussing the topics if the day, and at times formulating local policy—plus granting scholarships to local Valley high school graduates. Known as the “University Club,” its full title is “The Rogue River Valley University Club.”
