Bill’s Guests: Thursday, March 21, 2019

6:35: Melissa Henson, Program Director for the Parents Television Council kicks off our guest lineup today.

Melissa joins us today with an update on their struggle for a TV Ratings Reform. The reform would ensure that the parental guidelines are accurate, consistent, transparent and publicly accountable. The PTC, other pro-family leaders, and members of the public recently filed FCC comments on the matter; all but one of the 1700+ comments share how unreliable the TV ratings system is for families.

Naturally, the one that didn’t was from the entertainment industry (specifically, from the NAB, NCTA and MPAA), and the PTC predicted the industry’s response to keep the status quo perfectly here. But keeping the status quo will allow children to be exposed to more harmful adult content on TV

7:10: Luke Niforatas from Smart Approaches to Marijuana, (SAM), calls in today.

A landmark study published in the prestigious Lancet Psychiatry Journal finds that daily use of high potency marijuana is linked to greater rates of psychosis in Europe. According to the study, an estimated five in ten new cases of psychosis in Amsterdam and three in ten new cases in London are linked with high potency marijuana use.

“This study is groundbreaking,” said Dr. Kevin Sabet, president of Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) and a former Obama Administration drug policy advisor. “It is the first to show how marijuana impacts population rates of psychosis – and it’s results are chilling. For years we have known that low potency marijuana was damaging to mental health. Now the scientific literature is catching up with the rapidly increasing THC potency we are seeing on the market today.”

Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) is a nonpartisan, non-profit alliance of physicians, policy makers, prevention workers, treatment and recovery professionals, scientists, and other concerned citizens opposed to marijuana legalization who want health and scientific evidence to guide marijuana policies. SAM has affiliates in more than 30 states.

8:35: Jim Ludwick from Oregonians for Immigration Reform talks with Bill today.

The U.S. Supreme Court in a huge victory for American sovereignty and the Rule of Law ruled that the statute at issue clearly requires mandatory detention of specified criminal aliens, without bond, pending their removal. Let’s see some more common-sense rulings.

BREAKING NEWS: Supreme Court Limits Sanctuary Laws’ Effect

WASHINGTON – Today the United States Supreme Court issued its ruling in Nielsen v. Preap, in which criminal aliens claimed they were due bond hearings disallowed by Congress because immigration officials did not arrest them immediately after their release from state jails. The Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) had filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the case in support of the government.

Following IRLI’s reasoning, the Supreme Court held that the statute at issue clearly requires mandatory detention of specified criminal aliens, without bond, pending their removal – even if immigration officers did not arrest those aliens, as the statute also requires, “when released” from state custody. IRLI had also argued that reading the statute to exempt later-arrested criminal aliens from mandatory detention would give extra force to sanctuary laws, such as California’s, that leave federal officials in the dark about when criminal aliens will be released, allowing them to disappear into communities and evade arrest. The Court agreed with IRLI that Congress was most unlikely to have intended any such result.

“Sanctuary laws are the very reason many criminal aliens are not taken into detention right after they leave state custody,” explained Dale L. Wilcox, executive director and general counsel of IRLI. “It would be absurd if that delay gave them the further boon of being exempt from mandatory detention once they were caught. There is no way Congress intended to let jurisdictions leverage their unconstitutional sanctuary policies into yet further interference with immigration law enforcement.”

The case is Nielsen v. Preap, No. 16-1363 (Supreme Court).
