Ben Fagone: Medford Mail Carrier and Mayor

Ben Fagone came from an “underprivileged childhood” in New York City and joined the Army after high school. In World War II in the European theatre, Fagone earned a Silver Star, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Defense Medal, three battle stars, European Theater of Operations and Good Conduct medals. He retired with the rank of major and was the commanding officer of the Medford headquarters of the Oregon National Guard.

He moved to Jackson County in 1942 in an assignment to Camp White, the Army training base that later became the site of White City and the Veterans Administration Domiciliary. He met his future wife, Helen Smedley, one year later at a baseball game. Borrowing from her the $2 he needed for admission, “The story goes that he said he’d pay her back by buying the marriage license,” commented Sam Fagone later, one of the couple’s three children.

Helen Fagone graduated from Medford High and continued her education at the University of Oregon for three-plus years, ending when it was interrupted by her meeting with Sergeant Fagone (Benny). They were married for 43 years until Benny’s death in 1986; she passed away in 2007.

After 22 years in the army (five years in the regular army, 12 years in the National Guard, and five years in the active Army Reserve), he became a mail carrier in Medford. Benny became the first man to be president of the Oregon Parent Teacher Association (“PTA”). At various times he played, coached, and announced city league softball games and was president of the Jackson County Softball Association.

As a six-time president of the carriers NALC Association (The National Association of Letter Carriers (“NALC”) is the national labor union of city delivery letter carriers employed by the U.S. Post Service.) And for the first time in the history of the city, Medford residents elected a write-in candidate (Ben Fagone) to serve as their mayor for the 1975-77 term. With support from the Mail Tribune’s editor, Eric Allen, Fagone won by word-of-mouth endorsements. He lost his bid for re-election in 1976 to Al Densmore.

In addition to serving on the city council, school board, and mayor, Fagone was a three-time member of the city parks commission, a member of the board of directors of the Rogue Valley Transit District (serving as chairman in 1985) and a scoutmaster with the Cub Scouts. Fagone’s hard work and ability to gather volunteers made it possible to rebuild the ballpark which now bears his name.

Until 1982, there were no Amateur Softball Association games in Medford (now at U.S. Cellular Park), until he (then retired from the Post Office) and a 5 percent owner of the local minor league baseball team, initiated the program in 1980. Crater and Medford fielded ASA teams that next summer, and Fagone coached an eclectic team, forming a three-team league. It grew from there. He continued working every day at Fagone Softball Field until his death.

Helen Fagone was selected as the Medford Mother of the Year in 1961 and Grandmother of the Year in 1998. She served as Medford’s First Lady when Benny was elected mayor in 1975. In 1985, she and Benny were both inducted into the Medford Sports Hall of Fame for their involvement in Medford Softball. Helen learned scorekeeping at an early age from her mother, Emma, and continued to keep score until age 80. Fagone Field still honors Ben and Helen for their tireless effort in sharing their passion of softball with our citizens.
