The Beer Institute recently released its biennial “Beer Serves America” report, which shows the beer industry supports 2 million American jobs across the nation and produces $331 billion in economic contribution.
Here are some fun Independence Day Weekend facts about the history of beer in America!
- In 1587, Virginia colonists used corn to brew the first recorded ale in the colony. Today, brewers use several grains to make beer, including barley, corn, millet, oats, rye, sorghum, and wheat.
- Beer has been a job creator in the United States since its inception. In 1609, “Help Wanted” advertisements appeared in London seeking brewers for the Virginia colony. This tradition of beer being integral to America’s economy continues. The beer industry today supports over 2 million jobs in the United States.
- Our first president George Washington not only drank beer himself and served it to his guests, but it was also one of the items provided for voters when he was a candidate for political office. It must have helped because when Washington was president, he habitually “had a silver pint cup or mug of beer placed by his plate, which he drank while dining.”
- During his time in Philadelphia in 1774 to participate in the First Continental Congress, John Adams – who would become the second president of the United States –wrote to his wife Abigail, “I drink no Cyder [sic], but feast upon Phyladelphia [sic] Beer, and Porter.”
- Thomas Jefferson, our nation’s third president, served beer during dinner at Monticello– his Virginia estate. Jefferson’s earliest designs for his plantation included spaces for brewing and the storage of beer.
- During the Revolutionary War, beer was a part of soldiers’ daily lives. On June 10, 1775, the Massachusetts Provincial Council set the daily ration for its troops in Boston to include one quart of good spruce or malt beer.
- In 1862, President Lincoln signed legislation to tax beer to help finance the government during the Civil War. That same year 37 civic-minded New York breweries formed the United States Brewers Association for “ensuring safe and prompt collection” of the federal excise tax on beer. In 1986, the organization became the Beer Institute to represent brewers, beer importers, and industry suppliers before Congress, state legislatures, and public forums.

N.Y. Yankees Star and American Hero

Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Coleman was a New York Yankees second baseman who won the 1949 Rookie of the Year award, and in 1950, the World Series Most Valuable Player award. After his playing career ended in 1957, Coleman broadcast New York Yankees, California Angels and then, for 40 years, San Diego Padres games. Coleman also had a brief, unsuccessful stint as the Padres manager.
Although Ted Williams and Coleman served in World War II and Korea, only Coleman saw active duty in both conflicts. In World War II, Williams was a stateside flying instructor, while Coleman flew Douglas SBD Dauntless bombers over the Pacific.
Williams and Coleman were flying buddies in Korea. During Williams’ 39 Korean combat missions, often as Colonel John Glenn’s wingman, enemy fire hit the plane of “Teddy Ballgame” and forced a crash landing. But as harrowing as Williams’ experience was, during one flight deep into North Korea, Coleman watched his tentmate Max Harper, flying just ahead of him, get shot down and perish. Despite the emotional burden of seeing his good friend killed in battle, Coleman carried on.
In his autobiography “An American Journey: My Life on the Field, In the Air and On the Air,” Coleman wrote about his early, challenging youth in San Francisco. Coleman’s father, Gerald, a former Pacific Coast League catcher with the San Francisco Seals and the Seattle Rainiers, drank heavily. One evening, suspecting that his wife Pearl was two-timing him, Gerald followed her to a local nightclub, and shot her several times, a crime for which he was never prosecuted. Young Coleman went to live with his grandmother, and excelled at sandlot baseball and high school basketball. In 1944, he enrolled in the Navy’s V-5 flight training program at age 18, the minimum age for the training. Coleman eagerly enlisted; he feared that World War II might end before he saw action.
The war over, the Yankees activated Coleman just in time for the thrilling 1949 pennant race that the Bronx Bombers won on the season’s last day when the team beat the Boston Red Sox. Coleman had his career year in 1950, but the Marines recalled him at the end of the 1951 season. By 1953, he had learned to fly Corsair attack planes, and was sent to Korea. By the end of the 1953 season, the 29-year-old Coleman, now physically and emotionally exhausted, returned to the Yankees where he struggled in his few token appearances. Coleman’s on-the-field slump continued in 1954 and 1955. By 1957, the playing days of the 33-year-old Coleman were over, and he embarked on his broadcasting career which eventually landed him in the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame where he received the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting.
Coleman’s only baseball regret was when he piloted the Padres in the 1980s. San Diego finished last in their division, and Coleman happily returned to the broadcast booth where he spent more than four decades in total calling the Padres games.
When Coleman died at age 89 in La Jolla, Calif., he was a San Diego icon, most often known around town by his nickname, “The Colonel.” C. Paul Rogers III in his Society for Baseball Research Coleman biography wrote that the bona fide war hero was buried with full military honors, including a 21-gun salute and an F-18 flyover in the missing-man formation.
Looking back at his long and memorable life, Coleman said that he was most proud of his U.S. Marine Corp dive-bomber, fighter pilot days during his 57 World War II missions, and 63 Korean War missions. Coleman won 13 Air Metals, two Distinguished Flying Cross citations, the World War II Victory Metal, and eight other awards. Coleman once said that America “is bigger than baseball.”

The School That Wasn’t There
I drove 950 miles to give a commencement address. It was an elaborate hoax by a gun-control organization.
On May 14, I received a call from a man who identified himself as Jordan Simon, board chairman of James Madison Academy, a Las Vegas-based online high school with 2,000 graduating students. Mr. Simon told me students and faculty had picked me to be their commencement speaker.
I looked up the school and found a professional website (JamesMadisonAcademy.net no longer exists) featuring photos of smiling students and detailed descriptions of the school and teachers.
Mr. Simon offered to cover my travel expenses and pay a small honorarium. Since there were no direct flights from Missoula, Mont., where I live, and Las Vegas, he even offered to charter a plane to fly me down. That seemed excessive, so I drove. I wanted to save the school money and visit friends in Idaho on the way.

ELECTRICITY IS LIFE
Bountiful supplies of AFFORDABLE electricity is what keeps civilization alive. Yesterday I critiqued the Green push on no coal power by 2040, yet we’re at times 80% coal powered in S. Oregon. There really isn’t a PLAN, just an AGENDA, which will end up killing people unless those planning it are legislatively defenestrated. Here’s what happened during the heatwave, and we HAD affordable and good supplies of electricity: (From the State Medical Examiner)As of June 30, 2021, 63 deaths that preliminary investigation suggests may be associated with the Pacific Northwest heatwave. Now, picture the HB2021 future that Golden, Marsh, Brown, and the other Greens signed on to. All that steady “dirty” (because, CARBON) power is replaced with massive intermittent “clean” renewables. It will be like Venezuela/California with rolling blackouts…or else your “Smart” Meter will charge you a buck or more per kilowatt hour (normal rate is 11 cents) to keep your A/C (summer) or Heat Pump (winter) on to protect your family and (as the PR types will say) “Help You Manage Your Power Bill”. How many will die then?

OREGON DEMOCRATS PUT YOUR LIFE AT RISK?
Democrats gamble with your lives under the guise of “climate change.” State Senator Golden and State Rep Pam Marsh are two “True Believers” and voted for HB2021, which mandates NO coal power by 2040, 19 years from now. How much coal electricity is southern Oregon using right now? Here’s the grid snapshot:
At midnight this morning, 81 percent of the power keeping people here alive and cool was coming from coal. 1 o’clock Sunday, on the record setting heat day, all the unicorn fart green energy going full blast, coal was STILL keeping you alive, 64% of the total.
Building more windmills and solar farms doesn’t make up for the fact that you can’t DEMAND it when you NEED it. You only get it IF it’s available with bright sun and steady winds. You might ask Jeff and Pam if people have a duty to die of heat or cold to fulfill HB2021’s anti-people agenda? Ask them what their plan is to keep power on and affordable? I’ll venture a guess that the line of thinking is “Smart people will figure it out”. That’s not a plan, that’s (once again) gambling with people’s lives.

Here is the document we mentioned in the talk, a drawing that engineer J.C. Boyle made in 1911 when studying the proposed dam area, and Capt. Simpson’s comments afterwards:

Boyle, show a natural lake and 31-foot tall lava dam (one of 5 such natural lava dams that existed over millions of years) blocking fish migration past where the current Copco 1 dam is located! An adult salmon with a good long run can jump a maximum of 12-feet. No salmon known can jump a 31-foot tall dam…
Salmon migrated up the Klamath River for sure, but not past the natural 31-foot-tall dam and lake (‘Clammitte Lake’) that existed in 1911, as depicted in the engineering drawings by J.C. Boyle, when Copco 1 was built, and not anytime thereafter either!
It’s just not true… The next press release coming this week has said historic drawings…
This natural barrier of lava dams also seems to explain the ‘allopatric speciation’ in trout we see between the Upper and lower Klamath River, where the boundary (‘physical barrier’) are the 5-lava dams across the Klamath River in the area of Copco1 dam that we formed millions of years ago… one of them, 130-feet-tall was eroded, leaving the 31-foot-tall lava dam in place in 1911.
This is arguably why Red band trout, a carnivorous trout, lives only in the Upper Klamath River upstream from Ward Canyon and Copco 1 dam, and the series of lava dams (the longstanding physical barrier needed for allopatric speciation to occur…
And if the Red band trout ever made it down stream past Ward Canyon, they would prey on other trout and juvenile salmon and steelhead… not good!

Private Property
As I mentioned in the remonstrance yesterday, Laurelee and I brought our family and our research work to Oregon 42 years ago – We bought a farm in a wonderful little valley of our own in Josephine County. A valley of beautiful forests, lush fields, and a lovely 100-year-old house.
For 42 years our family has labored there to build our home and research laboratory. When Laurelee died, this was terrible for us, but we went back to work and just kept right on building. For the six of us, our children, and our grandchildren, it is our life’s work.
Now we learn that, in the transparent disguise of fire protection, the Senate of Oregon is considering taking from us – through no fault of our own – everything we have built.
And, doing this as well to the people of Josephine and Jackson Counties, whom I now represent.
That the real intent of this bill is seizure of private property rights, and not fire protection is obvious. For fire protection, the Senate doesn’t this huge bill with all of its apparatus for government intrusion.
All that is needed is the funding of a voluntary program. Volunteers or paid people could simply contact private property owners and offer to help them evaluate their fire protection needs – and a fund created by the legislature to pay for needed actions for those who could not afford them.
Not even one resident in one hundred would refuse to cooperate, and voluntarily open their doors to this program. The danger of further fires is now obvious to everyone. Who would refuse to cooperate?
And the possible very rare refusal would have no significant impact on the goal of the program.
Freedom from arbitrary government search and seizure of private property is a bedrock principle of our U.S. Constitution. A Constitution to which everyone in this room swore allegiance as a condition of sitting in this chamber.
This bill empowers agents of the government to enter our property without permission, search it, and bring in crews to change it in any way they wish.
Never mind that we have already built fire protection for our valley that surpasses that which most if not all of those who will invade our home have built for theirs.
Based on the location of our farm, they can single it out for different rules.
Measures 100-times less onerous than this have been tried in several southern Oregon counties. All were overwhelmingly defeated. In Josephine County the vote was 79 to 21. And those measures were just government search for possible zoning violations followed by reasonable fines if not corrected.
English common law, upon which our Constitution is based, can be summarized in two sentences. “Do all you have agreed to do.” And, “Do not encroach upon other persons or their property.”
Without private property, it is very difficult to retain personal freedom.
Nor does the property need to actually be taken. Once a family knows that their property can be taken at any moment, their personal drive to work and build a good life dies. The hope and dreams that motivate them die.
If this bill passes, what can motivate us to continue to work – knowing that at any moment, that which we are building can be taken away? And if we move away to another state leaving all that we have built in 42 years behind, could we really forget this and begin again?
Government search and seizure of private property is overwhelmingly unconstitutional.
In this case, seizure consists of bringing government crews onto the property without the owner’s permission to judge it and alter it in any way a government commission wishes.
This bill violates our custom and culture. It violates our Constitution. It violates the patriotic goals that our soldiers and sailors have fought and died for. It violates the example our nation has been to the world, -and – It violates the Pledge of Allegiance that we repeat here before every session.

Sorry UFO/UAP Enthusiasts: God, Not Aliens, Better Explains the Origin of Life on Earth

The U.S. Navy is set to release its report on UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) this coming Friday, June 25th. The Navy’s announcement is unlikely to settle the controversy about whether intelligent aliens exist somewhere else in the cosmos. Pre-publication leaks about the content of the report confirm that it contains “no evidence to link them [UAP sightings] ‘to any putative alien visitation.'”
Nevertheless, many leading scientists have in recent years been forced to propose that an alien intelligence “seeded” life on earth in order to explain how life first came to be on our planet.
Both evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and the late Francis Crick, for example, have proposed this theory – known as panspermia – to explain how life with its “signature of intelligence” first originated on Earth. Crick, the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, explained why he thought it necessary to resort to such a heory. “An honest man armed with all the knowledge available to us now, could only state that … the origin of life appears at the moment to be almost a miracle, so many are the conditions which would have had to have been satisfied to get it going,” says Crick.

Independent Women’s Forum and Independent Women’s Law Center celebrate the 49th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark sex equality law passed as part of the Education Amendments of 1972. Although many people associate Title IX with women’s sports, the law is, in fact, a simple non-discrimination mandate that bans sex discrimination in all federally funded education programs.
The passage of Title IX in 1972 ushered in a period of unprecedented educational opportunity for women and girls. Today, women earn the majority of bachelor’s degrees (57.7%), master’s degrees (61.4%), and doctorates (53.3%), and women today outnumber men in both law school and medical school.
Title IX has also led to an explosion in women and girls playing sports, with the number of women playing college sports increasing 545% between 1972 and 2016 and the number of female high school athletes increasing by 990% during the same time period.
Jennifer C. Braceras, director of Independent Women’s Law Center, said, “Title IX has been an incredible success. As a mother of three daughters, two of whom are Division 1 athletes, I am grateful for the opportunities that this landmark legislation opened to me and my daughters. Unfortunately, however, the law that was intended to break down barriers for women and girls is today being misused to impose a radical gender ideology on students and to prevent schools from ever taking into consideration relevant biological differences between males and females.”
In recent years, activists have misused Title IX to:
— shut down and punish opinions that some women find “triggering.”
— investigate, without due process, the murky he-said/she-said of drunken hook-ups and intimate relationships.
— redefine the term “sex” to include gender identity, meaning that that biological males who identify as female will now be entitled to play on women’s sports teams and share dorm rooms with female students.
Braceras continued, “Rather than twisting the statute beyond recognition, the Department of Education should to focus its efforts on enforcing the statute’s prohibition against sex discrimination.”
In a Win for Independent Women’s Law Center, U.S. Supreme Court Protects Student Off-Campus Speech
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Wednesday with Independent Women’s Law Center (IWLC) that a school district violated the First Amendment rights of a student cheerleader when the district punished her for an angry message that she sent via Snapchat after being cut from school athletic teams. The decision was 8-1, with Justice Stephen Breyer authoring the opinion of the Court and Justice Clarence Thomas dissenting.
Jennifer Braceras, director of Independent Women’s Law Center, said, “The ruling is a significant victory for free speech and freedom of expression. In the era of cancel culture, the ruling will, hopefully, deter school administrators from monitoring student social media accounts and/or punishing students for expressing viewpoints that some consider ‘triggering.’”
The case, Mahanoy School District v. B.L., raised complicated questions about whether public schools can punish students for things they post on social media and has broad implications for student speech about everything from the quality of school lunches to politics and social justice.
In March, IWLC filed an amicus brief with the Court in support of the student, arguing that allowing public schools to punish students for off-campus, on-line speech that offends others will have a chilling effect on student expression.
The school district claimed it has the power to punish off-campus speech that “targets” or “disrupts” the school. But IWLC argued that the school district was seeking the power to punish students for off-campus, on-line speech that criticizes or talks about the school community in ways that offend others.
At oral arguments, Justice Breyer told attorneys that he didn’t see evidence that this particular snap caused “material and substantial disruption” at school. If the school can punish a student for this type of snap, Breyer suggested, “every school in the country would be doing nothing but punishing.”
In his majority opinion, Breyer noted that public schools have a duty to protect students’ unpopular views, especially when expressed off-campus.
“America’s public schools are the nurseries of democracy,” Breyer wrote, and
[o]ur representative democracy only works if we protect the ‘marketplace of ideas.’ . . . schools have a strong interest in ensuring that future generations understand the workings in practice of the well-known aphorism, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”
Nevertheless, Breyer stressed that the Court was not barring schools from ever punishing speech that occurs off-campus and outside its control.
According to Breyer:
“The school’s regulatory interests remain significant in some off-campus circumstances[, including] serious or severe bullying or harassment targeting particular individuals; threats aimed at teachers or other students; the failure to follow rules concerning lessons, the writing of papers, the use of computers, or participation in other online school activities; and breaches of school security devices, including material maintained within school computers.”

It’s turns out that legislators and regulatory agencies, like the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (‘FERC’) have been influenced with misinformation and conjectures by minority stakeholders. Moreover, information critical to the decision-making process has obviously been obfuscated.
Undisputed geologic records and settled science show that; millions of years ago, lava flows created what are known as ‘lava reefs’ across the upper Klamath River Canyon, where the present day Klamath River dams are located.
One such lave reef formed a natural dam that is 130-feet tall that blocked the Klamath River millions of years ago. Behind this lava dam, or ‘reef’ was formed a large natural lake that existed since time immemorial. That naturally formed lake was “mile wide” in places and five-miles long, and given the topography, likely over 100-feet deep. More at:

TUSON, Ariz., June 16, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Of the 700 physicians responding to an internet survey by the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), nearly 60 percent said they were not “fully vaccinated” against COVID.
This contrasts with the claim by the American Medical Association that 96 percent of practicing physicians are fully vaccinated. This was based on 300 respondents.
Neither survey represents a random sample of all American physicians, but the AAPS survey shows that physician support for the mass injection campaign is far from unanimous.
“It is wrong to call a person who declines a shot an ‘anti-vaxxer,'” states AAPS executive director Jane Orient, M.D. “Virtually no physicians are ‘anti-antibiotics’ or ‘anti-surgery,’ whereas all are opposed to treatments that they think are unnecessary, more likely to harm than to benefit an individual patient, or inadequately tested.”
The AAPS survey also showed that 54 percent of physician respondents were aware of patients suffering a “significant adverse reaction.” Of the unvaccinated physicians, 80 percent said “I believe risk of shots exceeds risk of disease,” and 30% said “I already had COVID.”
Other reasons for declining the shot included unknown long-term effects, use of aborted fetal tissue, “it’s experimental,” availability of effective early treatment, and reports of deaths and blood clots.
Of 560 practicing physicians, 56 percent said they offered early treatment for COVID.
Nonphysicians were also invited to participate in the survey. Of some 5,300 total participants, 2,548 volunteered comments about associated adverse effects of which they were aware. These included death, amputation, paralysis, stillbirth, menstrual irregularities, blindness, seizures, and heart issues.
“Causality is not proven. However, many of these episodes might have resulted in a huge product liability or malpractice award if they had occurred after a new drug,” stated Dr. Orient. “Purveyors of these COVID products are protected against lawsuits.”

Yes, Russian President Vladimir Putin would make a good James Bond villain. He’s a former KGB agent whose opponents occasionally turn up dead. American politicians on both sides of the aisle are needlessly pushing us toward conflict with the country with the world’s second largest nuclear arsenal. House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff, D-Calif., calls for President Joe Biden to draw “red lines” against Russia, which has sought to “remake the map of Europe.” In fact, it is the U.S. and our Western European allies who have “remade” the map of Europe, and broke our word in so doing.
Between 1989 and 1991, the Soviet Union let practically its entire empire go without a shot being fired — an action almost unprecedented in human history. It did so partly because of Western promises that our military alliance, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, would not, in the words of then-U.S. Secretary of State James Baker, “move one inch eastward.” The long list of such assurances is detailed in declassified U.S., Soviet, German, British and French documents released in 2017…
Putin has complained bitterly about this Western duplicity, complaints echoed by former Soviet premier Mikhail Gorbachev. This needless provocation has also been criticized by former CIA Director Robert Gates, Cold War diplomat-historian George Kennan and others.
Now Ukraine, which has helped NATO in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean, and is a participant in NATO’s Defender-Europe 2021, is again moving toward joining NATO. This is in response to the Russia “threat,” allegedly evidenced by Russia’s 2014 takeover of the Crimean Peninsula.
The 2014 Ukrainian revolution overthrew a pro-Russian government in Kyiv and replaced it with a pro-Western one. Russia, already ringed with U.S. military bases in Afghanistan, the Persian Gulf and former Soviet Central Asian republics, as well as NATO bases stretching from the Black Sea to the Baltics, feared this might lead to a NATO naval base at Sevastopol in the Black Sea. Russia then seized Crimea and reincorporated it into Russia.
Despite the West’s angry reaction, Crimea is a part of Russia and has been since 1783. Russians there outnumber Ukrainians over 4-1…Putin is an amoral opportunist who certainly did not go into Crimea to help the Crimean people; however, most Crimeans did support a union with Russia and voted accordingly in an election held over Crimea’s new status…
Putin blames the U.S. for “the steps that deteriorated our relations,” explaining, “It was not us who introduced sanctions … We don’t have any issues with the U.S. … But (the U.S.) has an issue with us. It wants to contain our development.” He has a point.

The Jackson County Fair

State and county fairs began in the early- to mid-1800s to allow rural families to share their experiences, including exhibiting the best farm practices, seeds and crops, livestock, and equipment. The first state fair took place in 1841 on the populated east coast in Syracuse, New York. All of the states followed with their own local fairs.
These events were not only where farmers and ranchers met to talk “shop,” but also where everyone could see the latest inventions, whether electric lights, generators, radios, TVs, or even washing machines. The fairs now—including Jackson County—have arcade games, petting zoos, amusement centers, well-known singers, concerts, entertainment, and much more in addition to the traditional 4-H and FFA (“Future Farmers of America”) exhibits.
The first Jackson County Fair was named the “Agricultural Show” and held in October 1859 in Jacksonville, which was the same year Oregon became a state. The Jackson County Fair Association was organized in 1872, celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2009, and is the longest running county fair in Oregon.
The first fairgrounds were on south Oakdale in Medford: a half-mile horse racing track was inside the one-mile car-racing track, its grandstands facing east off Highway 99 where Walmart now is. With complaints from the city and county due to running its automobile races (which jeopardized Newell Barber Airfield that was inside) and needing a better location, the Fair moved in 1922 to where the Medford Armory is presently. It changed later to the present 245-acre location at the Expo in Central Point.
Country fairs were quite important before TV, theme parks, and the Internet. With races held before on everything from autos and airplanes to horses, the 1920s before the Great Depression were the Fair’s heydays—and the place to be seen by the well-dressed during the “Roaring Twenties.” Well-known drivers raced Duesenbergs, Millers, and overhead-valve Fords with special license plates in promotion. The famous Barney Oldfield attended the Jackson County Fair in one year to wave the checkered flag.
Commercial development along I-5 into the early 1970s infringed on the Fair’s need to expand, especially for rodeo, equestrian, and show-horse events. Jackson County sold the property in 1974 and moved to its current location. In 1998, the Red and Eleanor Isola Memorial Fund donated $700,000 to build the present 37,000 square-foot equestrian arena. With a 1,500 seating capacity, the Isola Memorial Arena and facility became the second-largest covered arena in the West next to one in Reno, Nevada.
Held in mid-July, the Jackson County Fair has numerous events and going-ons. Some 85,000 people attended the six-day fair in 2012; and the events included attractions from livestock judging to beer gardens, from Go-Kart races to steak suppers, and sprint car races to top entertainment. In 2013, the attractions included a “pirate parrot” show, a strolling robot, camel rides, hypnotist shows, sheep riding, motorcross racing, and a monster-truck show, in addition to the rodeo, bull-riding, and other traditional events. Later, the 245-acre Expo site had events from rodeos and concerts, stocks shows, and trades shows to car, spa and RV sales.
After cancelling the 2020 fair due to the pandemic, the Expo is back on track in 2021 (July 14-18). Owing to restrictions, tickets need to be purchased in advance and headliner concerts are to be held in the North Parking lot, depending on the “risk restrictions”–check their website.
However, this grand-daddy of Oregon fairs has more than held its own over the years—and has certainly changed with the times.

Klamath Dams Removal In The Midst Of ‘Water Crisis’ – Antithesis Of Water And Wildlife Conservation

YREKA, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, June 21, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — A recent AP news release was titled ‘Water crisis ‘couldn’t be worse’ on Oregon-California border’. And the unfolding historic drought is predicted to worsen.
Clearly, the growing needs for domestic water to support human needs and food production as well as wildlife habitats must not be ignored. That said, dam removal proponents are short-sighted and are merely looking to their own needs, which do not consider the big picture.
The shocking truth is that; in the middle of a record period of historic drought and ‘water crisis’, the governors of Oregon (Kate Brown) and California (Gavin Newsome) have collaborated with Berkshire Hathaway’s profitable Pacific Corp and a relatively few minority stakeholders to circumvent a Congressional Act, the Klamath River Basin Compact, and wrongfully remove 4-dams during a drought that’s intensifying.
And in that process, deprive a super-majority of Americans of their beneficial rights to the water, recreation, wildlife and other resources provided by Copco and Iron Gate Lakes behind the dams.
“In addition to circumventing the Act without Congressional approval, this ill-conceived dam removal project arguably flies in the face of the Public Trust Doctrine (‘PTD’). The Public Trust Doctrine requires the ‘highest and best use’ of the public’s natural resources in the beneficial interest of the majority of Americans and wildlife, not the minority. Instead, this project seeks to deprive the overall majority of Americans and instead favors the demands of a small self-serving minority who are supported merely by money and power, instead of science and logic. We desperately need national media coverage from NBC News, ABC News, CBS News, AP News and the rest of the national media to help bring attention to this pending catastrophe before it’s too late”; said naturalist William E. Three of the four Klamath River dams proposed for removal are in Siskiyou County, CA, where a referendum proved that 78.84% of voters were against the Klamath dam removal project.
In Klamath County Oregon, where one of the Klamath River dams is located, voters considered whether the four hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River should be removed. That vote proved 72% of voters are opposed to the Klamath River dam removal project.
Do the whims of a few minority groups who are arguably self-serving, and a wealthy for-profit corporation, now have preeminence over the American democratic process?
The native American Shasta Tribe, which historically is the largest tribe in the area of the Klamath Dams (see map graphic), are steadfastly against the removal of the dams.
“The Shasta Tribe has been asked for input by the Klamath River Renewal Corporation (‘KRRC’), and we have provided our input, but it seems our input was ignored. The deal that KRRC has struck is illegal. Eighteen treaties were made with local native American tribes, including with our tribe, the Shasta Tribe, which was not ratified. Land can only be taken by treaty. Our tribal lands make up the largest area around the Klamath Dams, which are on our tribal lands. We stand against the removal of the Klamath River dams.”; said Roy Hall, Chief of the Shasta Tribe.
The fresh water stored behind 3 of the 4 dams in Siskiyou County California amounts to 139,200 acre-feet of water. That equals about 45.4 – billion gallons of stored fresh water that will be lost if these dams are removed!
“As the fire chief of Copco Lake Volunteer Fire Department since 2008 I have witnessed many wildfires and structure fires at and near the lake. On countless occasions the fires have been swiftly and effectively extinguished due to the lake’s ability to provide quick, easy and safe access to helicopters and water scooping fixed wing aircraft. The lake also provides an excellent fuel break for fires which the river alone would not be guaranteed to provide. Proof of this is when the Klamathon fire jumped the river in Hornbrook leading to devastating loss of life and property in the town of Hornbrook. The loss of the lakes would create higher danger of fire spread and higher risk to the pilots of water drafting helicopters”, said Francis Gill – Chief 200 Copco Lake Fire Department.
Phil Reynolds, President of the Copco Lake Community Club said;
“Over the last 18 plus years, our members have repeatedly told the state, County, and local authorities and public servants ‘no dam removal’. We have endured countless meetings with multiple state, federal and other bureaucrats and a few with the (KRRC) about dam removal. Always our message has been no dam removal. We the citizens who are directly affected are continually brushed aside and ignored. Enough is enough”.
Ray Haupt County Supervisor, District 5 Siskiyou County California Board of Supervisors stated that;
“Under many decades of NEPA settled law, yesterday FERC made a Predetermined Decision to move forward with license transfer for the purpose of Klamath Dam removal. The associated ordered EIS is tainted as the transfer predetermined any objective EIS analysis and decision.”
“After 7 years and nearly $2 million dollars spent by Siskiyou County providing expert scientific testimony to protect our citizens and the environment, FERC dismissed our arguments without debate on its Consent Agenda. I pray looking forward, science and not politics will mandate environmental remediation that was required in the original KHSA but stripped from this latest agreement with the states of Oregon and California. Land owners, who will suffer the biggest financial loss, must be protected from the effects to flooding, devaluation of their property investments, loss of groundwater in wells and loss of water for firefighting that routinely protects the communities of Hornbrook and Copco California. The loss of tax revenue to the county’s schools, service districts and general fund with no plan for replacement is significant to my constituents.”
“If the dams are removed, numerous threatened and endangered species of flora and fauna would lose critical habitat and would likely perish, collapsing the area’s biodiversity and trophic cascades, further speeding the potential extinction of even more rare species. Just a few of such species of fauna include: Yellow legged frog, giant California garter snake, giant California salamander and the short-nosed sucker fish. There are numerous raptors, other birds and water fowl that depend on the open-water of Copco and Iron Gate Lakes as well as the shoreline ecosystem for access to prey and other sustenance. This includes Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Osprey, numerous species of hawks, falcons, and numerous species of birds, many of whom depend upon insect hatches in the lakes as well as co-evolved flora for sustenance…”
“Wildlife advocates and scientists who are desperately trying to be the voice for the endangered and threatened species that would suffer a loss of critical habitat are being ignored and obfuscated by the money and power that is pushing this illegitimate project. Clearly, it’s an insult to the democratic process and wildlife; said William E. Simpson II a naturalist who studies the wildlife in the area of the proposed dam removals.
Richard Marshall, President of the Siskiyou County Water Users Association, which represents a large number of commercial, residential and farming interests in Siskiyou County, stated;
“The issue that is constantly avoided by dam removal proponents namely that the removal of the dams will not help the Salmon population as represented by the adherents to dam removal at any cost.”
“The Siskiyou Water users have been intensively studying the science regarding the proposed removal of the four Hydro Facilities and find it to be continuously misrepresented by the proponents of removal. The fact is that historically the Salmon did not go past Ward’s Canyon except in extreme flood condition. The lava reefs prevented further movement. In addition, it needs to be noted that the Klamath River is a unique upside-down temperature gradient river meaning that the headwaters are warm and shallow and the Klamath River as it travels to the ocean becomes cooler fed by cold water streams out of the mountain ranges. This is important to understand because Salmon don’t spawn in warm water. Since time immemorial, the Klamath River was blocked by four successive lava flows creating a lava cliff 135 feet high at the location of Copco I. This was impossible for the Salmon to travel beyond.”
Even if keeping the dams in place may cost the uber-wealthy Berkshire Hathaway company a relatively slight loss in corporate profitability, this corporation must be held into account for attempting to:
a) Work-around Congressional approval that is arguably required to disregard an Act, and remove the Klamath dams; and,
b) Ignoring the fact that a super-majority of Americans have voted against any dam removal, and pretending that is not the case; and,
c) Denying a super-majority of Americans their rightful ‘beneficial uses’ related to 45.4-billion gallons of stored fresh water in the lakes behind the dams, recreation on those lakes, and the unique and rare wildlife that require the lakes and the shoreline ecosystems of Copco and Iron Gate Lakes.
Here are a few of the most important and obvious reasons for keeping the Klamath River dams in place.
1) About 80,000 homes and businesses in southern Oregon and California would lose the cheap, clean hydroelectric power that comes from the power generation plants on the Klamath River dams.
2) Removal of the Klamath Dams would interrupt existing natural pollution mitigation in the lakes by the green-algae that require the lakes as habitat. This in turn would require the Klamath basin agricultural industry to significantly reduce their production tempo, resulting in reduced food production in order to roll-back the agricultural runoff (nitrates, phosphates and livestock feces). And ranchers/farmers can bet that the DEQ will see that this is done when they see the eutrophication of the Klamath River if the dams are removed.
3) Numerous threatened and endangered species of flora and fauna and co-evolved dependent species would lose critical habitat and would likely vanish. Just a few of such species of fauna include: Yellow legged frog, giant California garter snake, giant California salamander and the short-nosed sucker fish.

5) Water for irrigation of lands and crops along with easily accessed water critical for fighting increasing catastrophic wildfires in the areas around the dams would be gone! 6) There will be a change in the ground-water (hydrology) and some homes, ranches and farms on and around the lakes will suffer changes in their well-water; reduced (lost) production, sedimentation changes, etc.
7) Potential for long-term catastrophic damage to the entirety of the Klamath River ecosystems due to the release of approximately 5-million metric yards of clay sediments that are laden with decades of pollutants from industrial agricultural production up-river from the lakes formed by the dams.
It’s important to know that the dams themselves are structurally sound and perfectly good. And that, over the past many years, Pacific Corp has been charging consumers for their electricity a fee to cover Pacific Corp’s costs for their planned dam removal. However, if Pacific Corp dosen’t care to renew their license with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), they could (and should) merely decommission and remove their generating plants, leaving the dams in place and improved with fish ladders. The fees collected from rate-payers, which with compounding interest-earned, is estimated to be approaching $1-billion! And now, Pacific Corp and their shell corporation, ‘Klamath River Renewal Corporation’ have somehow concocted a better scheme to get the taxpayers of California and Oregon to bear the lion’s share of costs and liability for the proposed illogical dam removal project, a project that is laden with unprecedented environmental and economic risks!
Oregon state senator, Dennis Linthicum, began his letter to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality with this:
“Current and future Oregonians are, and should continue to be, beneficiaries of the monumental achievements in water infrastructure that has created Oregon’s exemplary agricultural economy. The proposed removal of the four PacifiCorp dams, including the J. C. Boyle dam in Oregon, will destroy that very infrastructure. “
