In his recent editorial for The Poste Mail, Tom Harris -executive director of the non-partisan Ottawa, Canada-based International Climate Science Coalition- says: “the idea that any of the science conclusions of the IPCC are “unequivocal,” or, as Al Gore often asserts, “truth,” is irrational.”

Some good Covid news from the Times of Israel that we discussed Monday morning – Study indicating Vitamin D Deficiency has a large impact on how well someone with Covid Does in the hospital. Deficiency of D meant 26% died. Good D level, 3% died. Will the U.S. Win the War Against COVID-19?

As U.S. forces beat a chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, defeated after 20 years by the primitive Taliban, who clung to their guns and their faith, America’s invincibility as the “world’s only superpower” might be disputed.
Joe Biden told Americans, when speaking about his gun-control agenda, that to move against the government one would need F-15s and perhaps nuclear weapons. The Taliban lack those, although they have acquired a treasure trove of advanced weapons left behind by Americans.
Against Americans, the U.S. government might not deploy F-15s, nukes, bombers, or killer drones, but it has other means of compulsion, backed up by SWAT teams with assault weapons: prisons, ruinous fines, deprivation of licenses and permits, withholding of benefits on which one has become dependent, no-fly lists, or freezing one’s financial assets.
In the “war” against COVID-19, the government is showing its willingness to deploy all of these against anyone who might interfere with its strategy: lockdowns and mandatory warp-speed vaccine.
In war, civil rights get suspended. There is no freedom to express dissenting views; no freedom to work, to travel, to choose your medical treatment, or to decline treatment to which you object; no right to habeas corpus or a speedy trial; no right to compensation for taking your property. And “refuseniks” are even being denied medical care of any kind.
In the war against COVID, the U.S. is counting on its magnificent pharmaceutical industry to deploy novel drugs and vaccines. Meanwhile, it is engaged in unilateral disarmament, trying to thwart the use of the primitive remedies being used in less affluent countries that for some reason have much lower COVID death rates.
By March 2020, there were reports of successful treatment with chloroquine (CQ) or hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), derivatives of one of the oldest lifesaving remedies known, quinine from cinchona bark. The Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy was able to acquire 62 million doses of these drugs before both China and India shut off their exports to the U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Azar directed the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to develop an Expanded Access Investigational New Drug (IND) authorization for HCQ. Instead, with the advice of Janet Woodcock, who is now acting FDA Commissioner, then-BARDA Director Rick Bright restricted access through an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for hospitalized patients only.
No EUA is needed for “off-label” use of an approved drug. But combined with official pronouncements about alleged danger to the heart and the lack of “sufficient” evidence of benefit, few patients received HCQ. Supporting the global and U.S. fear campaign against HCQ were the federal government’s many allies: state medical and pharmacy boards, organized medicine, Big Tech, and the mainstream media. Hundreds of thousands of patients may have died needlessly for lack of early treatment, but “the Science” was saved.
Now ivermectin, another drug that has been used safely by hundreds of millions of patients for decades, is coming under attack by the disarmament advocates. Master of sarcasm Rachel Maddow is ridiculing people trying to save their lives by taking “horse dewormer.” That is one of many uses for this Nobel-Prize-winning drug. Poison control centers are reporting an “alarming” 550 percent increase in calls (from 23 to 150 over 8 months in Texas). Doctors wrote some 88,000 prescriptions for ivermectin in just one week. They are evidently persuaded by evidence of benefit, even if CDC isn’t. Many patients who can’t find a doctor who will prescribe for them or a pharmacy that will dispense are resorting to veterinary products—a practice no physician would recommend.

Products available under an EUA are by law supposed to be voluntary. FDA approval would remove that theoretical barrier to increasing coercion. Now, FDA has approved Comirnaty, made by the German firm BioNTech, which is virtually unavailable. The “nearly identical” Pfizer product is still under an EUA. FDA demands after-marketing studies, especially of myocarditis, with a 5-year follow-up.

It could be that our main approved weapon is safe and effective, the thousands of deaths and disabilities are coincidental or not as bad as the disease would have been, and the feared long-term effects are conspiracy theories. Or it could be that the intelligence from FDA, CDC, and other authorities is as reliable as what we had in Afghanistan.
Maybe F-15s and nukes are not needed to destroy America.

Ed and I also dig into the amazing Covid explosion in our area, and there’s a good chance that the intense smoke has contributed greatly.
Wildfires amplified the effect of exposure to PM2.5 on COVID-19 cases and deaths, up to four weeks after the exposure, the study found. In some counties, the percentage of the total number of COVID-19 cases and deaths attributable to high PM2.5 levels was substantial.
On average across all counties, the study found that a daily increase of 10 µg/m3 in PM2.5 each day for 28 subsequent days was associated with an 11.7% increase in COVID-19 cases, and an 8.4% increase in COVID-19 deaths. The biggest effects for the COVID-19 cases were in the counties of Sonoma, Calif., and Whitman, Wash., with a 65.3% and 71.6% increase, respectively. The biggest effects for the COVID-19 deaths were in Calaveras, Calif., and San Bernardino, Calif., with a 52.8% and 65.9% increase, respectively.
Researchers also looked at individual wildfire days and at individual counties to determine the percentage increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths in 2020 compared with what would have been expected with lower levels of PM2.5. They found that Butte, Calif. and Whitman, Wash. had the highest percentage increases in cases (17.3% and 18.2%, respectively); and that Butte, Calif. and Calaveras, Calif. had the highest percentage increases in deaths (41% and 137.4%, respectively.) In Calaveras, roughly nine COVID-19 deaths would have been expected under lower PM2.5 levels, but the actual number was 22—which explains the high percentage increase.
Across the three states studied, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases and deaths attributable to daily increases in PM2.5 from wildfires was, respectively, 19,700 and 750, the study found.

Last Saturday we held an Affidavit class at the JC Republican Party HQ. This affidavit is a solid response for religious & conscientious objections provided by the Oregon Statutes, very different from the “requests” provided by employers. Tuesday, August 31, the recording of that class, along with the documentation discussed will be available on the JCRP website www.jcrpcc.com . The republican party wants everyone to have the information that is interested in it.

The Rogue Credit Union

The lack of financial services in the mid-1950s brought a group of 10 teachers in Southern Oregon together to find a way to help one another. By forming a non-profit, financial cooperative (or credit union)–owned and operated by a group of individuals for their mutual benefit–they ensured to have access to fairly priced credit, a safe investment, and generally lower fees.
Members elect a volunteer board of directors to oversee the credit union, and the President/CEO reports to this board. Membership then was open to public school employees who worked in Jackson County, employees of the Credit Union, immediate family members, and organizations to which they belonged.
The credit union began its operation in 1956 out of the living room (and later the garage) of the credit union’s founding father Jim Johnston with his wife, Harriet. The Johnston’s outgrew their 100-square-foot garage and purchased a home in 1964 on the corner of Newtown and Stewart for its office from where the credit union continued to operate. During the 1960s, the Jackson County Teachers Federal Credit Union (“JCTFCU”), as it was known, moved into this office, started a newsletter, and hit the $1 million mark in assets. It ended the decade having a part-time operation in Ashland.
In 1972, a merger and name change to Rogue Federal Credit Union allowed membership to expand to city, county, state, and school employees. Rogue Credit Union in 1980 met the $20 million mark in assets and in 1984 opened its Ashland Branch. The 30th year was marked with the opening of an office in North Medford and the credit union hit $50 million in assets by 1986.
With the end of 1996 and 40 years later, Rogue Credit Union (“RCU”) boasted $120 million in assets and over 27,000 members. During 2001, the National Credit Union Administration approved an amendment to its charter expanding membership to include Josephine and Klamath counties, as well as allowing a branch to be operated in Grants Pass (2004) and Klamath Falls (2005).
In 2012, it purchased and assumed the Oregon operations of Chetco Federal Credit Union from the National Credit Union Administration. This resulted in the addition of Curry, Coos, and Del Norte counties to the charter area (with five full service branches from Brookings to Bandon). Presently with 19 full-service branch locations in six Oregon counties, and one drive-up location in Medford, it serves a variety of financial needs from basic financial services to mortgage loans, investment services, and business loans.
The Mail Tribune for years has recognized RCU as the #1 Financial Institution in its Reader’s Choice Award, as well as Oregon Business Magazine also recognizing it as the #1 Best Large Non-Profit to work for in our state. Additionally, a study for Forbes in 2018 listed RCU at the best among Oregon’s credit unions.
The credit union now has over 165,000 members, boasts assets of $2.5 billion dollars (70% of this is now loaned out to members), and returned last year $6 million in dividends. Any person who lives, works, owns a business or has an immediate family member in 28 Oregon counties (this state has 36) can become a member and keeps ownership by maintaining a minimum savings account balance; each person is allowed only one share in the credit union.
Its growth rate is among the top credit unions in the country–all due to continuing excellent management (i.e., Gene Pelham, President/CEO), every member being an owner, and the efforts of one small, insightful group in 1956 with Jim and Harriett Johnston.
