6:20 Professor Alain Sanders is an attorney, former Time Magazine Senior Reporter and Professor Emeritus of Political Science at St. Peter’s University in Jersey City, NJ. He is often called upon by major market TV and radio stations as well as news networks to discuss legislative, political and international developments. Today we discuss his thoughts on the upcoming January 6th “TV Show” tonight.

6:35 Dr. Currie Myers – Voters in San Francisco have done more than simply vote to recall Chesa Boudin as district attorney. They’ve sent a message to the entire nation: People are fed up with the epidemic of violent crime in America. https://www.wsj.com/articles/san-francisco-district-attorney-chesa-boudin-faces-recall-election-11654603200

But fighting violent crime is more complicated than just getting rid of uncaring, liberal prosecutors. It takes a holistic approach involving police funding, proven crime prevention strategies, and differentiating between dangerous violent criminals, and non-violent offenders.

No one is better equipped to tackle this issue than Dr. Currie Myers. As a criminologist, university professor and retired sheriff, Dr. Myers possesses a rare blend of academics and street smarts that makes his voice indispensable in the discussion of violent crime and how to fight it.

7:35 Kees T. Hooft, filmmaker, documentarian, AND Biodiesel manufacturer from London, England. Kees is a cousin of Paul Prinsen in Medford, and has a fascinating film, adventure, and life story. He’s made MANY documentaries for the BBC, and co-edited the film “Passage to India”. Paul shares some notes about Kees:

A documentary (Involving Kees) that is readily available on the internet is the overland journey from London to New York. The tunnel between Britain and France had just been completed, so the convoy drove through it. On to Paris, Berlin, Moscow and from there through extreme conditions of cold and terrain to the frozen Bering Strait.

The over ice crossing with special conveyances did not work out, so there is a little fudging. Onward through Alaska, Canada and ending in New York. Multiple adventures on the way, like the hospitality of the people; the lawless and dangerous areas where they needed protection; a visit and tour of a nuclear power plant in the middle of now-where, run by what seem, like good old boys. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA5A80FA2CD055358

8:10 Free Enterprise Project (FEP) Associate Ethan Peck discusses a question that he submitted to the CEO of American Airlines.

American Airlines “Absolutely” Considers Skin Color and Sex
When Hiring Pilots

Shareholder Activists Call It “Insane” That Passenger Safety
Comes Second to Woke Equity Agenda

Washington, D.C. – American Airlines CEO Doug Parker today confirmed that the company “absolutely” prioritizes immutable characteristics such as skin color, sex and sexual orientation when hiring pilots.

During the company’s annual shareholder meeting, held virtually, Free Enterprise Project (FEP) Associate Ethan Peck submitted this question to Parker:

American Airlines makes no secret of its commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI), especially as it pertains to hiring. Are these DEI policies also applied when hiring pilots?

Parker responded:

Oh, absolutely, of course. Both at the mainline and the regionals. And if anybody wants to see proof positive, take a look at a video we put out, “[Honoring a] Legacy of Firsts.” It’s on our website and in the newsroom. And it’ll show you the great work that we’re doing from a DEI perspective, especially with bringing black aviators to the business and then seeing their careers really, really prosper, especially at American.

The exchange can be heard here.

“Illegal discrimination is evil in all situations, and equity-based discrimination is still just discrimination. In picking pilots, it’s straight up insane,” FEP Director Scott Shepard said after the meeting. “In its eagerness to stay woke despite ever-growing evidence that woke leads to failure, American Airlines is endangering lives and trashing its reputation.”

“Competence ought to take precedence over uninteresting immutable characteristics when evaluating candidates for any positions,” Peck agreed. “It’s bigoted to think otherwise. But when it comes to pilots, it’s not just nondiscrimination, morality and productivity on the line; its passengers’ lives.”

6:35 RJ Hauman, Federaton For American Immigration Reform www.FairUS.org  director of government relations, and we discuss the latest on the migrant caravans:

  • The caravan is now 11,000 strong and on Monday departed Tapachula on the Mexico-Guatemala border. The group is expected to swell up to 15,000.

  • Many of the migrants come from Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua – three countries whose authoritarian rulers have been left out of this week’s summit.

  • On Monday, Mexican President Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed that he would not attend the gathering in protest because leaders from the three countries were not invited.

  • Fox News interviewed Haitian migrants taking part in the caravan who demanded that President Biden keep his promise to allow them to stay once they reach the border. “He promised the Haitian community he will help them,” the migrants, who were interviewed by Fox News Friday, said. “He will recall Title 42. He will help us have real asylum.”

  • The caravan is making its way northward as the Biden administration is fighting in court to end Title 42, while implementing a new policy that would allow asylum officers to rubber-stamp the applications of most illegal aliens who arrive at the border and make a fraudulent claim.

7:10 Elected Farm Service Agency Rep Glenn Archambault – Glenn and I discuss the new water hauling rules and how this might be harming southern Oregon farmers and rural homeowners.

7:35 Josephine County Commissioner Herman Baertschiger talks the sports park transfer, water. Politics.

Bob Riehm: Larger than Life Coach and Mentor

By Dennis Powers

Bob Riehm was born in Iowa in 1937 and committed at an early age to the sport of wrestling. For Bob, wrestling started in elementary school and continued through high school in his home town of Britt, Iowa. He then wrestled at the University of Iowa–one of the top universities in that sport–from where he graduated in1960. He taught and coached wrestling in different capacities then at Iowa, Nebraska, and Illinois, earning also a MA from Truman University.

Joining Southern Oregon College (now SOU) in 1969, he began teaching and coaching men’s wrestling. His first team went 7-7 in dual matches, but his Raiders teams never again came close to a losing record. His ninth season, in 1977-78, brought the school’s first-ever national title. His team won another title five years later, in an undefeated season capped by back-to-back wins over the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. His team won a third NAIA championship in the 1993-94 season, his last as head coach.

At SOU, Riehm mentored 100 NAIA all-Americans and 13 national champions during his 25-year Raider coaching career. Over the course of this, his teams won 12 NAIA regional championships and 18 teams finished in the top eight at the NAIA national championships. He had at SOU an admirable record of near 80% with a 270-71-2 career dual meet coaching record and with friends attended many of the NCAA national championships, where he kept in touch with top teams and coaches.

He finished his career having earned virtually every coaching distinction possible, including two National Coach of the Year awards, election to the presidency of the NAIA Coaches’ Association and induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame, Oregon Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and the SOU Sports Hall of Fame. Although impressive, his objectives were always more than wins, losses, and recognition, as he kept in touch with his student-athletes, helping them out in later life.

The gymnasium inside SOU’s former McNeal Pavilion was named Bob Riehm Arena in 2011, at the conclusion of a fund drive in his honor that raised more than $100,000 for scholarships and equipment, his own donations–and in recognition of his accomplishments. Riehm Arena, now in Lithia Motors Pavilion, continues as the center of competition for SOU’s men’s and women’s wrestling teams.

Bob passed away at age 83 in November 2020. His legendary influence at SOU and within the wrestling program continues in perpetuity with a $3 million donation in February 2022, the largest-ever single gift to it. The bequest was announced by SOU and his surviving sisters at a celebration of life then held. A third of the gift endows the men’s wrestling head coach position at SOU, which will be named for Riehm, and two-thirds funds scholarships for the team’s wrestlers.

He was as successful in his business life, as he was in coaching: although primarily in real estate and stock investments, he mentored others in his approach. This writer first met Bob in 1993 and to 2020–whether at events, dinners, or wrestling meets–saw his charismatic personality. Regardless of personal or others’ ups and downs, he was in person Jack Nicholson, as in the movie, “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”
