Comment sent to City of Medford Council today

I respectfully demand that you stop moving forward with the current re-striping/alteration traffic control plan, commonly referred to as “The road diet plan” pushed for downtown Medford. You are engaging in a consensus-based process pre-determined outcome and are NOT getting true public input. I will point out that consensus is not a word found in the U.S. Constitution, nor the Constitution of Oregon. You are being supplied by staff with information supporting a predetermined agenda-based outcome that is not considering the true CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED. True public input and consent has been neither given, nor sought. Information acquired through a consensus-based support mechanism is not a valid reason to continue in this direction.

(From today’s study session packet) “On-Line Survey – A public on-line survey was completed which received nearly 700 responses. Of this total, 69.7% favored the no-build option which would leave all striping and lane configurations unchanged. 30.3% respondents favored some or all of the recommended options. Council should note that this was an open uncontrolled survey; we received responses from all over southern Oregon and does not represent a true scientific sample of Medford residences.“

If you are being pressured through grant stream funding requirements to pursue this direction, then I respectfully demand that you back away from the grant stream funding option. Withdraw from the grants stream funding. The small business activity that occurs in downtown Medford cannot be supported by these proposed changes. It will destroy business viability.

It is your fiduciary duty as a city council to oversee these proposed changes and recognize them for the danger to our small business community that they are.

Affiliation with and/or influence from The American Planning Association gives your employees no right to neglect their fiduciary obligation and duties, as employees of the citizens of this city, to propose changes that are ultimately destructive to the health, safety, welfare, (long-term economic welfare) and well-being of the citizens of our city.

Your staff sourced the survey and now wishes to avoid the negative impact from the referenced survey. The City encouraged people to use the survey. I encouraged listeners to my morning show to give you their public input and now “It’s an uncontrolled Survey”.

Are 300 bicyclists signing a petition with the Velo Club (An agenda-based group) a “Controlled Survey”? Of course not. The Velo club’s noted 300 person input is basically a consensus-based stakeholder interference with common sense realities, and can only be construed as one comment in any percentage-based analysis.

Perhaps staff isn’t doing a scientific survey because they KNOW that a proper survey, with a REAL public input session and hearing, would give the “Wrong” answer.

Do your fiduciary duty and represent THE PEOPLE, not the staff’s adherence to a pre-determined outcome stakeholder-based process.

On Tuesday, the White House released its “Roadmap for Nature-Based Solutions to Fight Climate Change.” In addition to “nature-based solutions” for military installations, the administration said it would look for similar solutions for energy, the economy and national security.

The Greater Idaho movement continued its winning streak in eastern Oregon for the fifth election cycle in a row by winning elections in Morrow County, where the town of Boardman is located, and Wheeler County. The movement aims to convince state legislatures to move the Oregon/Idaho border to make conservative counties of Oregon into counties of Idaho, which is a red state.

A report just released by the Oregon State Pharmacy Association (OSPA) is revealing new details about what’s leading to skyrocketing prescription drug prices in Oregon and the closure of pharmacies across the state. The report shows how Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) are taking advantage of pharmacies while charging Medicare and Medicaid astronomical prices; in one case, more than eight times the original asking price. PBMs are middlemen companies between drug manufacturers and patients’ health plans that were originally meant to control drug costs and accessibility, but are now driving up the cost of your prescription drugs.

DAY AFTER ELECTION…

A celebratory Dinner (Pork Chops/smashed potatoes) with my Linda tonight. She managed Commissioner Roberts re-election campaign and it went great! (Although one TV station announced incorrectly at first that she had lost!) Anyway, savor the victories where we find them. I’m glad that Christine Drazan isn’t conceding to Terrible Tina, there are mail-in votes and who knows what else. There’s no reason to be in a hurry, let it play out.

Randy Sparacino had a tough battle against Golden in a +7 Dem district. 52-48 is a damn respectable performance, just wish he had won. John West will be a great fit in the Jo County Commission, and great to have Comm. Dyer returned to office. Frankly surprised there was so little churn in our local legislators, all re-elected. I just grumble that Marsh/Golden had the same situation. Amazing that the two sponsors of the detested SB762 have managed to skate back into office.

Mushrooms mostly went down except for Phoenix at last check, and Jackson County. Amazing how many leftists find their love for the military once it’s time to manufacture yet another hallucinogenic drug in our area.

Now…about Measure 114? Look for a legal challenge if it continues to pass. Unbelievable how many Oregonians gleefully vote to take away constitutional rights that are in the state AND fed constitution. No, there is no forgiveness for this evil. We still have a lot of work to do…

SOU’s Wrestling Teams: A Best-Kept Secret

The strong run of SOU’s wrestling teams depended on its coaches and dates back to Bob Riehm, who coached in 1969 for 25 years to his retirement in 1994. He compiled a 270-71-2 career record (near 80%), mentoring 100 NAIA All-Americans, numerous ones who later became wrestling coaches. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame, the Oregon Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the SOU Sports Hall of Fame. The gymnasium inside SOU’s former McNeal Pavilion was named Bob Riehm Arena in 2011.

Mike Ritchey then guided the Raiders to 23 consecutive winning dual records and finished with an overall mark of 235-107 (near 70%). A nine-time regional coach of the year and two-time NAIA Coach of the Year, his teams captured 14 conference or regional championships, won a national championship, placed second in the team standings five times, and was also inducted into the Hall of Fames, as Bob Riehm was.

The women’s wrestling team is relatively new, dating back to Mike Ritchey and SOU President, Roy Saigo, in starting this in 2016 with the men’s wrestling team. Joel Gibson’s coaching for the last two years brought the women’s team to its present national prominence prior to the hiring of a new women’s coach.

A longtime SOU wrestling assistant, Phoenix High School coach, and former Raider All-American, Joel was named SOU’s head men’s and women’s wrestling coach in 2019. With the men’s coach doubling as the women’s, it was Bob Riehm’s huge posthumous gift that allowed the hiring of a full-time coach in June 2022 for the women’s team.

The women’s team had completed its fourth season before Gibson took over. In his first season, he led the Raiders to an 8-2 dual record. They were No. 3 in the NAIA coaches’ poll and boasted eight individuals with top-10 rankings going into the NAIA Invitational Tournament, which was canceled owing to Covid the day before being scheduled to begin.

The women’s team took second place in the 2022 NAIA wrestling finals, plus its world-class wrestler, Sienna Ramirez, not only won her NAIA championship, but also won the 2022 U.S. Open later in Las Vegas. This moved her one step closer to making USA Wrestling’s senior-level world team. However, in a “Final X” 2022 wrestle-off in Stillwater, Okla., on June 3rd, she lost in a best of three series to the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist, Tamyra Mensah-Stock.

Bob Riehm, who passed away at age 83 in 2020, left a $3 million donation to SOU in 2022; one-third of the gift endows the men’s wrestling head coach position (allowing for a new women’s coach), and the other two-thirds funds scholarships for wrestlers. In that year, Gabrielle Weyhrich was appointed the new women’s coach.

At McKendree University (Illinois), Weyhrich helped the Bearcats to team titles in the NCAA division of the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships in 2020, ’21, and ’22, with four top-three finishes at the WCWA National Duals. During that time, she completed a master’s degree in business administration.

She was a team captain and WCWA national finalist during her undergraduate days. Weyhrich has also been a Body Bar national finalist, a U-23 national finalist, and a fourth-place finisher at the USA Wrestling 2018 World Team Trials. That year, she qualified for the “Final X True” Third Match.

These wrestling teams have been the most successful at SOU for five decades and a new season is upon us.
