7:35 Tim Winter, president of the Parents Television Council chats with Bill today. We got more talk on the controversial Netflix show “13 Reasons Why,” which appears to blatantly glorify teen suicide.

Before Season 3 of Netflix’s teen-targeted suicide drama, 13 Reasons Why, is released on August 23, the Parents Television Council has appealed to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings to end the series and cease its continued distribution. PTC President Tim Winter wrote to Hastings, attaching the signatures of more than a thousand parents, grandparents, and other concerned citizens “who think Netflix was too slow to react to concerns about the messages and imagery in 13 Reasons Why and who still believe the show should be pulled entirely.”

Hellgate Jetboat Excursions

In 1980, Robert Hamlyn and his wife traveled throughout the Pacific Northwest in their motor home. After spending several days in Grants Pass, they sold their Southern California home and moved there. First owning and operating an equipment rental business in Grants Pass, they sold it when Robert was managing Rogue Jet Boat Excursions. In 1988, he purchased Hellgate Jetboat Excursions and merged the two operations together. The business has prospered over the years to where it now employs over 100 staff members during its peak season and is the Pacific Northwest’s #1 River Trip.

Hellgate Jetboat Excursions dates back to 1959 with Grant Garcia; two years later, he began using a flat-bottomed, 32-passenger wooden boat on the 35-mile round-trip from the Bridge Motel in Grants Pass to the Hellgate Recreational Area. His boat could operate in as little as six inches of water due to its water-jet propulsion system. The ticket price then was $4 for adults and $2 for children under 12 on three-times-a-day trips. The Hellgate is a narrow, deep canyon with sheer rock walls that rise over 250 feet above the river and its boiling rapids.

Thirteen years later, Gary and Julie Woolsey bought the business and greatly expanded its operations. In the ten years to 1987, they built seven boats (from smaller ones with a 16-passenger capacity to ones that carried 82 people), all being propeller-less with a hydro-jet system. The Grants Pass departure point moved from the Riverside Inn to Riverside Park, and they introduced brunch and dinner stops on different trips. The Woolseys brought in the OK Corral as the dining facility and added a 5-1/2 hour, 75-mile round-trip to Grave Creek with a lunch stop at Galice.

In 1985, the owners of the Riverside Inn started Rogue Whitewater Excursions, a competitor to Hellgate. One year later, they hired Hamlyn to manage its problematic operations, and he soon changed the rival’s name to Rogue Jetboat Excursions. Robert Hamlyn then bought both and merged the competing operations into the present company and its name.

Hellgate designs and manufactures its jet boats in Grants Pass through its Katanacraft operations. It has added numerous new vessels since then with improvements on each one: a windshield with wipers, so pilots could see the river more clearly; more efficient pumps to improve fuel efficiency; and internal speakers so passengers could always hear the pilot. Moreover, Katanacraft creates aluminum vessels for deep and shallow depths, along with small craft boats and floating docks.

The OK Corral was renovated in 2005, and the 12,000 square-foot, open-air facility by the Rogue River—where osprey, bald eagle, and deer sightings are common—is reserved exclusively for Hellgate guests. Located 18 miles west of Grants Pass, up to 350 people can dine at a time after traveling past rocky beaches and sheer cliffs.

Its Shop River Rock gift store is located within the reservation facilities, open year-round, and is more than 6,000 square feet. The season is from May to mid-September, depending on the trip, and over one million passengers (over 85,000 per season) have overall enjoyed these trips.
