6:35 Robert “Bobby” Charles of the Association of Mature American Citizens chats with Bill today.

Young Americans may be more liberal today than any generation that went before them. But according to

Robert “Bobby” Charles, spokesman for the 1.9 million members of Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) – the conservative alternative to AARP – that doesn’t mean that young people are going to remain in the progressive camp.

New young voters have an almost instinctual attraction to the counterculture. For a long time, the dominant culture within the media and academia has been uniformly liberal. Under the right circumstances, says Bobby Charles, conservatism may be viewed as edgy, or the “new cool.”

But moving the hearts and minds of America’s youth will require bold, new ideas and aspirational alternatives that appeal to their optimism and idealism.

Please contact me to set up a conversation with Bobby Charles, who can speak to how the older generations can help young Americans get in touch with the conservative counterculture.

Sherm and Wanda Olsrud

By Dennis Powers

Born in 1924 to a poor rural family in Maddock, North Dakota, Sherm Olsrud was the son of a blacksmith. After serving as a marine in the South Pacific during World War II, Sherm headed to work at his uncle’s restaurant in Eugene. There, he met his wife, Wanda, and they married one year later in 1947. Using money he received from the GI Bill, Sherm learned meat cutting and they bought their first business, Sherm’s Meat Market, for $500. The Eugene store expanded and eventually became Sherm’s 24-hour market, a rarity at the time. But thanks to Sherm and Wanda’s tireless efforts, it was a success.

Traveling south in 1967 with Wanda and their young sons, Steve and Rod, Sherm began a long, fruitful career in the Rogue Valley. They sold their Eugene business and bought the Thunderbird Market in Medford that year. The Olsruds then established themselves among the top grocers in Oregon. The couple, whose legacy is so closely linked, worked 12- to 15-hour days all week after they bought their first market in Medford.

In the decades that followed, they expanded into other cities: Sherm’s Thunderbird Markets are now located in Medford, Klamath Falls, and Roseburg. The company also owns Food 4 Less in Medford and employs in total over 600 people. Few coupons, consistently low prices, and no-frills buildings were their hallmarks.

The Olsruds donated up to 50,000 pounds of food a year in truckloads to ACCESS, including items that weren’t typically donated, such as paper towels and toilet paper. They were major contributors to an after-school center at Kids Unlimited (“KU”), and their contributions helped build the gym that now bears their name. The couple supported endowed scholarships at Southern Oregon University, Future Farmers of America (“FFA”), and the Oregon Community Foundation. (Meat from FFA animals is sold at the stores.) At Harry and David Field, a section of bleachers were named due to this support.

In 2001, Sherm and Wanda were awarded the Chamber of Medford-Jackson County’s “First Citizen Award.” Olsrud paid $18,000 to the Medford School District in the early 2000s to erect the fence that encircles the McLoughlin Middle School campus. Years ago, when Sherm’s Thunderbird store received a share of the proceeds for selling a winning Powerball ticket, Sherm donated the funds to elementary schools. They supported both the original and rebuilt playground in Bear Creek Park and the Jackson County Expo; Olsrud Arena is a testimonial to that support. Children younger than 12 are admitted into the fair free each year, thanks to the Olsruds. In 2017, Jackson County honored them with a lifetime achievement award.

Despite his age, he was nearly a daily visitor at the Medford Thunderbird and had a small office upstairs. Sherm died in May 2019. He and his wife, Wanda, who survives him, established a long legacy of community philanthropy and service.

“He always just said that Southern Oregon had been good to him, and he wanted to repay Southern Oregon any way he could,” said Steve Olsrud, Sherm’s 71-year-old son. His fondest memories with his dad were trips to Florida, Jamaica and overseas. “My dad and I went to Singapore and China,” he said. “Those were some of the best memories.” Our entire region is better for the Olsruds deciding to live here.
