A friend recently asked me what I was most excited about in the biotech industry, outside of what I’m working on. I paused for a minute, and then realized that I’m unfortunately not excited about much right now. I realized, sadly, that a lot of focus right now is on follow-on drugs for well-trodden indications that are lower risk. The problem is one of incentive structure: we are witnessing a decisive shift toward de-risked commercial spaces. Pharmaceutical companies are prioritizing follow-on treatments for established, well-trodden indications. These areas offer safe returns and clear regulatory pathways, but they sideline pioneering work and leave behind patients with rare and underserved diseases.
The obesity market best illustrates this paradigm shift. For decades it was unclear whether drugs could ever be approved for weight loss. Now, post-GLP-1 approval, the floodgates have opened, targeting a large global population with a high willingness to pay. The market’s momentum is staggering: sales, already nearly $16 billion globally, are projected by some estimates to top $150 billion by 2035. This financial landscape naturally incentivizes rapid, incremental innovation, such as oral GLP-1s and the next generation of “Triple G agonists” targeting glucagon, GLP-1, and GIP, which promise even greater efficacy. As Congress and the Trump administration argue over visa issues, perhaps they should look first to a Department of Homeland Security program called Optional Practical Training. Michael O’Neill explains:
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) operates a regulatory program, called Optional Practical Training (OPT) that prevents recent American college graduates from obtaining gainful employment. After graduation, nonimmigrants who have studied in the United States are permitted to remain in-country for up to three years so long as they are employed in STEM related fields and enrolled in the OPT program.
In 2024, over 400,000 nonimmigrants held jobs under OPT. Tech companies and other corporations utilize the OPT program as a pipeline for cheaper entry-level employees.
Last week, Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt sent a letter to the DHS outlining the numerous problems with the OPT program. He called upon DHS to conduct a review of the program and “begin the process of either reforming or ending [it].” DHS should immediately begin to implement Senator Schmitt’s guidance.
The OPT program functions as an end run around the carefully crafted conditions under which nonimmigrants can enter and remain in the country under the student-visa program.
In this era when AI is already beginning to take the place of entry-level tech jobs, it is imperative our government eliminate or significantly reform regulatory programs that harm American workers. Young college graduates with enormous debt should not have to compete with foreign-born workers for jobs.

FBI Director Kash Patel shared details Friday about the bureau’s investigation into Thomas Crooks, after Tucker Carlson alleged President Trump’s would-be assassin left digital warning signs that he was planning an attack.
The former Fox News host has accused the FBI of lying about Crooks’ “online footprint” and revealed disturbing social media comments Friday purportedly made by the 20-year-old in the years leading up to the July 13, 2024, shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pa. – suggesting he may not have been a “lone wolf.”
“The investigation, conducted by over 480 FBI employees, revealed Crooks had limited online and in person interactions, planned and conducted the attack alone, and did not leak or share his intent to engage in the attack with anyone,” Patel wrote on X, providing an overview of the case.
As part of the investigation, the FBI director said the bureau “conducted over 1,000 interviews, addressed over 2,000 public tips, analyzed data extracted from 13 seized digital devices, reviewed nearly 500,000 digital files, collected, processed, and synchronized hundreds of hours of video footage, analyzed financial activity from 10 different accounts, and examined data associated with 25 social media or online forum accounts.”

Bob Riehm: Larger than Life Coach and Mentor

Bob Riehm was born in Iowa in 1937 and committed at an early age to the sport of wrestling. For Bob, wrestling started in elementary school and continued through high school in his home town of Britt, Iowa. He then wrestled at the University of Iowa–one of the top universities in that sport–from where he graduated in1960. He taught and coached wrestling in different capacities then at Iowa, Nebraska, and Illinois, earning also a MA from Truman University.
Joining Southern Oregon College (now SOU) in 1969, he began teaching and coaching men’s wrestling. His first team went 7-7 in dual matches, but his Raiders teams never again came close to a losing record. His ninth season, in 1977-78, brought the school’s first-ever national title. His team won another title five years later, in an undefeated season capped by back-to-back wins over the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. His team won a third NAIA championship in the 1993-94 season, his last as head coach.
At SOU, Riehm mentored 100 NAIA all-Americans and 13 national champions during his 25-year Raider coaching career. Over the course of this, his teams won 12 NAIA regional championships and 18 teams finished in the top eight at the NAIA national championships. He had at SOU an admirable record of near 80% with a 270-71-2 career dual meet coaching record and with friends attended many of the NCAA national championships, where he kept in touch with top teams and coaches.
He finished his career having earned virtually every coaching distinction possible, including two National Coach of the Year awards, election to the presidency of the NAIA Coaches’ Association and induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame, Oregon Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and the SOU Sports Hall of Fame. Although impressive, his objectives were always more than wins, losses, and recognition, as he kept in touch with his student-athletes, helping them out in later life.
The gymnasium inside SOU’s former McNeal Pavilion was named Bob Riehm Arena in 2011, at the conclusion of a fund drive in his honor that raised more than $100,000 for scholarships and equipment, his own donations–and in recognition of his accomplishments. Riehm Arena, now in Lithia Motors Pavilion, continues as the center of competition for SOU’s men’s and women’s wrestling teams.
Bob passed away at age 83 in November 2020. His legendary influence at SOU and within the wrestling program continues in perpetuity with a $3 million donation in February 2022, the largest-ever single gift to it. The bequest was announced by SOU and his surviving sisters at a celebration of life then held. A third of the gift endows the men’s wrestling head coach position at SOU, which will be named for Riehm, and two-thirds funds scholarships for the team’s wrestlers.
He was as successful in his business life, as he was in coaching: although primarily in real estate and stock investments, he mentored others in his approach. This writer first met Bob in 1993 and to 2020–whether at events, dinners, or wrestling meets–saw his charismatic personality. Regardless of personal or others’ ups and downs, he was in person Jack Nicholson, as in the movie, “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”
