Economic Health Watch: How Can We Decrease the Cost of Medical Care?

If you are like most Americans, one of your biggest financial worries is the cost of medical care. For some, their “insurance” costs about as much as their mortgage—and with a high deductible before any benefits are available.

The biggest part of “administration” is not useful activities such as scheduling and ordering supplies, but attempts to collect third-party (government and insurance-company) payments.
Physician time spent on compliance and documentation—perhaps as much as caring for patients—isn’t counted as “administration.” It is likely the main cause of physician burnout.

Suggested ways to cut out administration: break up vertical integration; restore the practice of private medicine; allow catastrophic insurance; have patients pay directly for imaging, labs, procedures, and physician services (instead of paying a much higher amount through “insurance”); establish site-neutral payment (hospitals don’t get paid much more than independent facilities); end “certificate-of-need” laws (which protect hospitals from competition); and stop forcing Medicaid patients into managed care (Medicaid is the cash cow for behemoths like UnitedHealthCare).

Patients should ask the cash price before revealing that they have insurance. They may get prompter service and a price lower than their “co-pay.” The cash price for prescription drugs may be even less than with a GoodRx coupon (and the pharmacist makes more money).

Joy Community to Showcase Phase 1 of their Abandoned Senior Housing Project

JACKSON COUNTY, OREGON — June 3, 2025 – Amidst the tidal wave of homelessness across America, a growing yet largely unseen tragedy is the dispossession of retired seniors. Many of these are folks who worked hard all their lives, yet now with minimal savings and a modest Social Security check are unable to afford a place to live. Unfortunately, senior homelessness is estimated to triple by 2030, sparking Joy Community to take action.

This Thursday at 10 AM, June 5th, unit tours for Phase 1 of this project will be available at Joy Community which is located at 2811 Biddle Street, Medford 97504. Leadership and Seniors that will move into units will be available for interviews. Snacks & beverages will be provided. The units are not officially debuting, rather this an event to showcase the property.

THE MISSION: Joy Community’s purpose is to serve the needs of “abandoned and forgotten” homeless seniors. Joy is a community for the lonely and forsaken. Joy will unite the willing hearts and hands of many in the community in service to the neighbors living in Joy Community.

THE PLAN: Create a community of safety, opportunity for independence and self-sufficiency to create dignity and self-confidence for seniors.

THE COMMUNITY (Phase 1): The initial phase will consist of 10 individual studio tiny homes with shared community amenities such as bathrooms, showers, and a kitchen. Initial funding has come from private donors, churches, civic groups, and foundations. Our leadership team aims to minimize costs by soliciting donations of skilled labor and materials.

Join The Club:

Joy Community will be funded by the larger community of generous donors giving at least $20 a month, as part of the “Joy Community Builders Club” to help sponsor Joy Community. Already we are honored to have supporters who are faithfully giving donations of $50, $100, and even $250 monthly. Each Neighbor pays a monthly fee to be in the program, but total cost is far more than what these seniors can afford. Together, we can make sure Joy Community continues to serve “abandoned and forgotten” seniors month after month.

Contact: If you’d like to get more information about Joy Community or would like to donate, please call Chad McComas at 541-773-4004, email community@setfreeservices.org, or visit joycommunityoregon.org.

7:35 Josephine County Commissioner Ron Smith talks about the controversy over the county’s “Challenge, or Morale Coins” and who knew or paid, etc.

From the Commissioner – Clarification on the Challenge Coins

I want to take a moment to address the issue surrounding the challenge coins that recently came to my attention.

I first learned about these coins just over a week ago when I saw one on a staff member’s desk. Curious, I asked what it was and where it came from. I was told that one of the commissioners had ordered them. Naturally, I then asked for documentation — including receipts and payment records — to understand who authorized the purchase and how it was paid for.

Let me be very clear: I had absolutely no prior knowledge of these coins, nor would I ever support spending taxpayer money on something so frivolous. I would never vote in favor of such a purchase. I believe strongly in fiscal responsibility and transparency, and this is not how I believe public funds should be used.

Shortly after discovering the coins, I saw that a public information request had been filed regarding them. I thought, “Good — this needs to come to light.” Now, however, I find myself having to explain something I had no role in. That’s not right.

I will not take responsibility for someone else’s decisions. Whoever ordered the coins should be the one to explain why and how they did so. That’s their burden — not mine.

Like many of you, I’m frustrated and disappointed. But I also want to be transparent about what I do know and what I didn’t know. I stand by my commitment to accountability and responsible leadership.

Commissioner Smith

8:10 Kevin Starrett from Oregon Firearms Federation www.OregonFirearms.org, joins me on Zoom – We’re both concerned about all the bad bills passing and the refusal of republicans in the House and Senate to deny quorum. Last time the quorum denial was attempted it failed, and this is sometimes used as an excuse to not use this power. Starrett explains in this segment who the last walkout was “designed to fail” by a few of the Republicans.
