TUESDAY 9/15 Morning News Update #1

MORNING UPDATE #1 for 9/15/20 from KOBI NBC5

THERE ARE 34 ACTIVE FIRES IN THE STATE OF OREGON.   AND THE EXTENT OF THE  DEVASTATION IS BECOMING MORE CLEAR… WITH MORE THAN A MILLION ACRES BURNED. AT LEAST 10 PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM FIRES,INCLUDING 2 IN THE ALMEDA FIRE. NEARLY TWO DOZEN PEOPLE ARE STILL MISSING STATEWIDE. STATE OFFICIALS REPORT 11-HUNDRED HOMES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED AND 500 DAMAGED. BUT THAT NUMBER IS LIKELY TO GO UP AS EVACUATION NOTICES ARE LIFTED.

MEANWHILE…THE OREGON STATE FIRE MARSHAL’S OFFICE SAYS THE ALMEDA FIRE IS 70-PERCENT CONTAINED. A TASK FORCE FROM UTAH, IS CURRENTLY IN THE TALENT AND PHOENIX AREA BEGINNING A DETAILED SEARCH FOR HUMAN REMAINS AND POTENTIAL HAZARDS. AS FOR FATALITIES, THE NUMBER OF DEATHS HAS CHANGED FROM FIVE… TO THREE OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS.

JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF SICKLER SAYS THE THREE REMAINING FATALITIES ARE ALL CONFIRMED. TWO OF THOSE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AND JCSO IS TRYING TO IDENTIFY THE THIRD VICTIM, A MAN.

RESIDENTS OF PHOENIX AND TALENT DISPLACED BY THE ALMEDA FIRE CAN STILL PICK UP THEIR MAIL ACCORDING TO THE POST OFFICE RESIDENTS OF THE 2 CITIES CAN PICK UP THEIR MAIL AT 173 EHRMAN WAY IN MEDFORD.

A LOCAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE ORGANIZATION SAYS  ITS BEING OVERWHELMED WITH CALLS FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS WANTING TO HELP OUT. IT SAYS THE OUTREACH IS SOMETHING IT’S NEVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE. THE ORGANIZATION SAYS YOU CAN VOLUNTEER THROUGH ITS WEBSITE ROGUE VALLEY DOT RECOVERS DOT ORG. THEY ARE ALSO LOOKING FOR DONATIONS OF FOOD… PILLOWS… SLEEPING BAGS… AND HYGIENIC SUPPLIES.
