Nelson Research late last week releases statewide Oregon GOP gubernatorial candidate polling. If you were voting today, who?1) Bud Pierce 6.5%2) Christine Drazan 6.3%3) Stan Pulliam 4.2%4) Bob Tiernan 3.5%5 Bill Sizemore 2.7%5) Marc Thielman 2.1%6) Jessica Gomez/Brandon Merritt tied at 1.7%7) Kerry McQuisten 1.3%8 Bridget Barton 1.2% Paul Romero, Nicholas Hess, Amber Richardson all way below 1%, Court Boice didn’t appear to make the poll. 68% are undecided, a lot, but if you can’t make it well over 1 percent at this time it’s looking like a path forward is unlikely, especially if there’s little money in the coffers and 4 weeks until the election. I’ll be emceeing a gubernatorial candidate’s forum a week from Friday in Jo County, and we have to listen to the people in these surveys and offer time to candidates who have a chance. It was the Golden Age of Travel and everyone wanted in. As flying boomed in the 1960s, women across America applied for jobs as stewardesses, drawn to the promise of glamorous jet-setting, the chance to see the world, and an alternative to traditional occupations like nursing, teaching, and homemaking.

Ken has just published an investigatory piece into the Oklahoma City bombing case. The anniversary of the 1995 attack is yesterday.
The story examines current Attorney General Merrick Garland’s role in the case. One detail of possible interest is that Garland was apparently visiting with Hillary Clinton at the White House the night before a major hearing. Researchers Ken spoke with suggest Garland helped cover up certain inquiries into McVeigh accomplices.

Student Loan Forgiveness Is Welfare For Middle And Upper Classes
- The numerous student loan pauses, as well as demands to fully forgive student loans, have little to do with the pandemic and everything to do with a political goal ahead of the 2022 midterms.
- Contrary to the picture painted by left-wingers of greedy banksters taking advantage of impressionable young students, 92 percent of student loan debt is held by the federal government — not by private banks. Most of these loans offer an interest amnesty until after graduation. Furthermore, the richest 40 percent of the American public holds 60 percent of the student loan debt, while the bottom 40 percent holds just 20 percent of the debt.
- Even if the federal government found a way to bail out only graduates who aren’t on track to make large salaries, such a move would be illogical. Why should plumbers who went to trade school be forced to bail out those who chose to take on hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to obtain degrees in philosophy, art history, or Kazakh film?

Jeremy Guthrie: Major League Pitcher

Jeremy Guthrie was born in 1979 in Roseburg to a Japanese-American mother from Hawaii. He is a yonsei or fourth generation Japanese-American, but does not speak Japanese. Growing up in Ashland, he excelled at basketball, football, and baseball, as well as the classroom, where he was class valedictorian at Ashland High. Jeremy also reached the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts.
He attended Brigham Young University before transferring to Stanford, where he was a starting pitcher on its baseball team. He was the team’s ace and Stanford reached the 2001 College World Series final, but lost to the Miami Hurricanes in the championship game. A first-round selection by the Cleveland Indians in the 2002 MLB draft, he signed a four-year, $4 million contract that included a $3 million signing bonus.
Although pitching irregularly for the Indians, he spent the majority of the next three seasons in the minors. In 2007, the Baltimore Orioles claimed Guthrie off waivers, where he then had a 3.70 ERA, went 7–5 in 32 starts, and was considered for the American League Rookie of the Year award. During the 2008 season, Guthrie emerged as the team’s staff ace. He finished the season with a 3.63 ERA, going 10–12 in 30 starts. In 2009, he pitched for Team USA in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, which lost in the semi-finals.
The 2009 season wasn’t a good one, as his ERA reached 5.04 while leading the league in losses with 17. Guthrie rebounded in 2010, winning a career-high 11 games despite losing 14 and lowering his ERA to 3.83 in 32 starts. In 2011, he pitched for over 200 innings for the third straight season, while also leading the league in losses for the second time with 17.
In 2012, he was traded twice, landing with the Royals in July. He proved to be the best pitcher for the Royals in the season’s second half, posting a 3.16 ERA and a 5–3 record. Guthrie then signed a three-year, $25 million deal with the Royals through 2015, earning $5 million in 2013, $11 million in 2014, and $9 million in the contract’s last year.
Guthrie logged the most innings of his career during the 2013 season with 212. He finished with a 15–12 record and a 4.04 ERA in 33 starts. During the 2014 season Guthrie posted a 4.13 ERA over 202 innings and finished the regular season with a record of 13–11. He made two starts in the 2014 World Series against the San Francisco Giants, going 1–1.
On May 25, 2015, Guthrie had one of the worst starts in MLB history against the New York Yankees. Guthrie gave up nine hits, 11 earned runs, three walks, and four homeruns in the first inning before being pulled after getting three outs. Becoming a free agent after the 2015 season, he signed multiple minor-league contracts before being released each time (i.e., Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres, and Miami Marlins).
In 2017, he signed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals; called up on April 8th to start against the Philadelphia Phillies, he had another bad start. On his 38th birthday, he was taken from the game after getting only two outs in the first inning—but after allowing 10 runs.
Guthrie then signed and was released by the Melbourne Aces (Australian Baseball League) and the Acereros de Monclova (Mexican Baseball League, before announcing his retirement from the MLB on July 31, 2017. Over his 12 year major league career, Guthrie had 91 (wins) – 109 (loses) with an overall ERA of 4.42.
Keeping his roots to Southern Oregon, Guthrie started the installation of a new synthetic turf football field at Ashland High by announcing a $650,000 donation in March 2015. A $100,000 donation from Lithia Motors, $50,000 pledge from Max McKee, and other donations (including the DeBoer family with $25,000) helped the Ashland School District exceed its fundraising goal of $850,000. While the field was being installed, the Grizzlies played their home games at Raider Stadium.
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (“LDS”), he served for two years as a missionary for the church in Spain. Guthrie began a three-year assignment as president of its Texas Houston South Mission in July 2018. He lives in Portland with his wife, Jenny.
