The Rogue River Gorge and Falls

The Rogue River has three distinct regions: the Upper Rogue, Middle Rogue, and Lower Rogue. For 40 miles, snowmelt and springs from the peaks of the Cascade Range—including Mt. Mazama of Crater Lake—feeds the river through the Upper Rogue from Boundary Springs to Prospect, as the main tourist route to and from the lake winds with it. The narrow, swift waterway cuts through thick forests of pine, oak, fur, and bank-lining alder, and it carved a steep canyon more then 200-feet deep at times for two miles, the Rogue River Gorge, which is a major tourist stop.
The Middle Rogue runs from Prospect to past Grants Pass, where it widens to more than 150 feet at times. The tributary flows through an ancient valley formed some one million years ago when Western Oregon slowly worked up to form the Pacific Coast Range. The Dakubetede, Takelma, Shasta, and Applegate tribes mingled throughout the area—collectively referred to as the Rogue River tribe—for countless centuries before the fur trappers, miners, and farmers settled here.
An easy day trip to visit the beauty of waterfalls, trails, the Rogue, and even the Rogue River Gorge is to head from Medford towards Crater Lake on Highway 62. Driving past Eagle Point to Trail and Prospect–about a 1-1/4 hour drive–one can see the waterfalls and river.
Waterfalls are seen by the Prospect State Scenic Viewpoint parking lot off Mill Creek Drive just outside of Prospect. Mill Creek, Pearsony, and Barr Creek Falls are the top three, along with the Avenue of the Boulders (house-sized boulders that were thrown from the Mt. Mazama eruptions millennias ago). Upstream from these is the Rogue River Gorge with two viewing spots.
The most visited of these falls is Mill Creek Falls, where the creek plunges over 170-feet into the Rogue; most of the viewing is from a 100-foot bluff on the river’s west side. The trail from the parking lot to the fall’s overlook is less than a half-mile. About a quarter-mile farther down the trail is Barr Creek Falls, a smaller rivulet that heads 240 feet down a basalt gorge wall to a small Rogue pool below.
This section near the top of the gorge is where the Rogue runs around a series of massive, house-sized basalt boulders with pools and small sandy beaches. The Natural Bridge–lava tubes and water falls south of Union Creek–is where the Rogue showers 300,000 gallons of water per minute through ancient lava tubes. Further ahead is Union Creek and Beckie’s Restaurant (serving meals since 1926, it’s known for its pies made fresh daily). Beckie’s and Union Creek Resort are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The entrance to Crater Lake is some 20 miles away; although it’s possible to see the sights at Prospect and Union Creek, then to Crater Lake and back, it seems easier to take your time and do this in two trips or plan for an evening’s stay in the park (but be sure to call ahead and see what is open or not at that time.)

Some “light reading” that I read on my vacation that I think is so insightful that I had to share it. It’s from John Water’s Substack, and is a long read but SO worth it. How Fear and Propaganda are used to mold the collective mind. About 30% of the people are literally hypnotized by the narrative to the point of “deifying the error”. 40% go along to get along with it, while about 30% resist the programming. SOME PERSPECTIVE, PLEASE??
The news propaganda channels collectively wring hands and deliver Jackson County Health’s latest “grim milestone” of 300 Covid deaths. Not to take death lightly, but destroying rights, education, liberty, people’s jobs and employment opportunities, economies, and social cohesion over 300 deaths…300 out of some 221,000 people over almost 2 YEARS, is proof that most Oregonians are stupid about numbers. Yep, innumerate, having no concept or understanding about what the numbers mean in the grand scheme of things. During the same period you can figure 900 people died of cancer, roughly 600 of heart disease, several dozen suicides. And then you’ll have the stupid person who attempts to shut down the argument by fear-mongering “If it saves just one life” or “One Death is too many”. These same dim bulbs conveniently ignore this line of thinking when it comes to abortion. How can this really be about “public health” when authorities exempt themselves, or give their favored union cronies passes? We’re being played, plain and simple. We’ve been played for almost 2 years. C’mon folks, wake up out of the collective hypnosis, would ya’?

The Living Memorial Sculpture Garden

The Living Memorial Sculpture Garden (“LMSC”) is located on the northwestern slope of Mt. Shasta, 13 miles north of the City of Weed, on Highway 97 in the Goose Nest Ranger District of the Klamath National Forest in Siskiyou County, California. The area rests on 136 acres of land provided by the USDA Forest Service (“USFS”), which were replanted with tens of thousands of trees by countless volunteers. The trees are a living tribute to all veterans who have sacrificed their lives in war and peace. The site includes an impressive memorial wall and ten large, metal sculptures by artist Dennis Smith.
Ric Delugo, an artist and Vietnam vet, in the summer of 1987 envisioned a living memorial at first for Vietnam veterans: a dedicated forest grove consisting of more than 58,000 trees, one planted for each American service person killed in the Vietnam War. He explained his idea to a friend, John Sutter of the USFS, who guided the project through the bureaucratic process.
Over time, the concept came to include a broader understanding of war and its effects upon all persons caught up in this. Delugo’s vision included the installation of a series of metal sculptures, and he spent weeks tracking down an old friend and artist, Dennis Smith, a Marine veteran of Vietnam, who had a talent for making large steel sculptures.
In 1988, Dennis arrived in Siskiyou County with $6 in his pocket. At first, all Ric could offer Dennis was a place to live and food. But as time passed, they began getting small donations to buy materials and needed tools.
The LMSC started with the acquisition of the land needed. Soon, this idea took hold within the region, as volunteers donated their time and labor, as well as generous financial contributions for the garden’s creation.
Church groups, high school children, 4H clubs, Veterans groups, and the American Legion, among others, planted more than 90,000 trees provided by the USFS. Further donations enabled the building of the Memorial Wall, including a helicopter sculpture by Dennis Smith.
The Weed/Lake Shastina Kiwanis Club assumed later the responsibility for the LMSG. Each year, two memorial services are held there, one on Memorial Day (May) and another on Veterans’ Day (November). At these memorial services, new names are placed on the Wall. This is an exquisite site that should not be missed.
